Supernatural continues to take us down the road to the end. More flashes of bad things and another hunt lead us toward understanding what is really happening to the Winchesters.

Before you read on, be aware that this list of the 5 best moments will contain heavy spoilers from this episode of Supernatural. If you haven’t watched “Proverbs 17:3” yet, head over to The CW app to check it out first. Or have a look at our recap and get caught up.

Once you’re ready to press on here, grab your popcorn or whatever and let’s look back at the hits. Not only were we treated to a major surprise with a character returning who was definitely long gone, but we got to see another oddly easy hunt happening.

More from Supernatural

Like the last, it wasn’t much for jeopardy, as Becky mentioned to Chuck, last episode in “Atomic Monsters.” Unfortunately, things changed fast and it seems Chuck found a remedy to that. We got more glimpses into the potential future and Dean learned that he is still somewhat of a plaything for God.

All of these things whipped together into another fine episode of our final season of Supernatural, and I continue to be surprised at how well the creators are doing with this meaningful final journey we’re all on.

We’re seeing more of the trend involving Sam and Dean reliving their previous experiences, but the twists are taking us down the new path to the end. It’s always amazing to see how they weave us from an old story into a new one without missing a stitch. One minute it’s familiar FBI badges, the next minute it’s a dead archenemy on the scene.

All of that said, we got some clear information but not from a very good source. We won some, we lost some, and now the future is at hand. Let’s take a look now at our most memorable points from Episode 5, “Proverbs 17:3.”

5. Friends forever

Our hunt began with three girlfriends camping on an annual trip for the millionth year in a row. The girls were all celebrating graduation from college and having a few drinks while they kicked back. One girl, Ashley, was a lot more nervous than the other two, but of course, her daring friend went to prove everything was fine out there.

Immediately we were treated to chomping and screaming, and then it all came clear to the other two girls that their friend was very murdered. The threatening woodland noises were still upon their tent when the remaining mostly brave girl decided to go and zip the tent closed.

Honestly? She couldn’t have expected that closing the zipper would keep them safe. I can see the thought of sitting there with the thing open was probably not exciting, but that’s a big risk when you really just heard your friend get eaten by a thing.

Ashley was still terrified as she was when the girl who thought she was indestructible went out there in the first place. At this point, she could barely continue to exist through the fear that was now realized as truth. So as the other friend reaches the zipper to do the whole “hide under the covers” maneuver, obviously, she gets snatched and eaten, as well.

All of this happened in just a moment’s time and quickly we learned that we were looking at a werewolf. I thought for sure this would be the reason we saw Jensen Ackles made up to have been bitten. But that’s not where we finally got to see some true jeopardy this time. However, it seems still to come.

During her hospital interview, Ashley named the suspect and things just couldn’t be going more smoothly. Another super easy hunt? This was getting odd already.

4. Brother vs Brother

Immediately, Sam and Dean were able to track down not one, but two werewolves. They took note that the attack hadn’t been during a full moon and they found that odd. Assuming they were possibly purebloods, they came prepared when they knocked on the door of the brothers in the woods.

One brother was pretty crabby right from the get-go. He didn’t want to answer questions, said they didn’t have a phone and never saw that girl from the photo before. But his brother took a different route.

He mentioned they were sometimes out in the woods at night and they’d be happy to keep an eye out for the creature doing bad things in the woods. But Sam and Dean weren’t convinced. They let them go on their way, but it wasn’t long before they were back again.

When they returned later, they busted down the door, having heard Ashley screaming inside. The brothers took her from the hotel where Dean was meant to be keeping watch over her, because it was important she didn’t tell any more of their story, putting their way of life at risk.

Sam and Dean tracked her to the house in the woods and were gonna save her for sure. But what do you know? As soon as the two brothers were confronted, one goes mad and the other shoots him. He said his brother changed, he promised not to kill anyone else, but he knew his brother was not going to keep that promise.

And to make things even easier, the young werewolf gave a speech about how he never wanted to hurt anyone and hadn’t killed a single person. He had been the one to threaten Ashley, but hadn’t done anything else. He talked about how he was a monster now and then he killed himself.

It was nearly the same speech from “Atomic Monsters,” when the freshly minted vampire boy declared that he couldn’t control himself and he would hurt people. Then he went off to be exterminated for the good of everyone. He said he was a monster, as had the vampire teen, as had Jack. He just wanted to be good.

And then he did the only logical thing, he shot himself in the stomach. I was kidding, it wasn’t the only logical choice. But it still happened, and the boy hit the floor. Brother against brother. One finds out the other is a monster and believes there’s nothing he can do about it except “the right thing.” We’ll be seeing that theme more and more, I suspect.

3. Lilith

Well, holy Mary. Guess what? That third camper, the one who survived, she was a little more than we all bargained for. It seemed so easy, so fluid, and as it turns out, there was a big reason why. So when Becky told Chuck to take it easy in his writing, it seems like he didn’t listen very well.

More tenants being snatching out of the Empty by God. You know that shadow is getting irritated by now. And I’m also very certain this won’t be the last time. For now, though, Lilith showed back up and had a bone to pick, to be sure.

Obviously, she was not pleased to be doing God’s work, as she was a Lucifer loyalist to the very last breath. But what she was excited about was the opportunity to deliver a touch of vengeance on Dean for his interference with her great plan to free her master from his cage.

Now she was looking for The Equalizer, the supernatural weapon that could take out God. And the only good reason for that was fear from the Almighty. We know he’s back at his typewriter, so to speak, and this only solidifies the idea that there’s a fight coming.

This moment was most remarkable in two points. When Lilith fell on the antlers, the look of surprise was great from Dean and Sam. But when she opened her eyes and rose, expelling the antlers from her body without a touch, we were all a bit surprised then.

Good job to Supernatural for getting that one past at least me. I don’t know if I missed some telling foreshadowing of this, but I did not see it coming. Luckily, Lilith’s little visit was short and also gave us a lot of information.

It’s that part in the story, like Becky mentioned, where the villain gives away their whole plan. Chuck wasn’t there to say it, but Lilith assured the boys that everything was still by his design. As I expected, Dean was pretty devastated by this knowledge, but we’ll come back to that.

I thought it was very interesting the way Lilith spoke of Chuck. And to hear that he had somewhat of an obsession with Dean was not big news. But she said it was a “pervy” one, and that was new to me.

In fact, it made me think back to Belphegor, the way he said Dean was such a fine human, it had a note of attraction in it, to be sure. Once that thought crossed my mind, I also thought of Ardat saying to Castiel that he didn’t know “what” Belphegor was. Now I’m wondering if there’s some other connection going on there. We’ll see.

Finally, Lilith bested the Winchesters and found The Equalizer as charged by God. Right before their paralyzed eyes, she melted it in her hand. The last we saw of it, there was nothing more than a cooled puddle of metal on the ground. I sure hope they picked that up. Maybe it could make a super bullet?

2. Just a dream

The first glimpse that Sam was experiencing something supernatural, was when Castiel tried to heal him back in the Season 15 premier. He was seeing red, literally, when we all got a glimpse of what could be assumed to be a future crisis for the Winchesters.

Now we’re seeing more and more of these glimpses, mostly taking place when Sam is unconscious. He doesn’t know if they’re dreams of visions, but he’s been keeping it to himself until now. After Dean filled him in on Lilith’s information, suddenly it seemed like a good time to share.

The original vision was only partial and it left us all wondering what was going on. Now we’ve seen the rest of that one and it was pretty terrible. In it, Dean talked about Sam drinking demon blood and doing some really bad things to their friends and family. But Sam was unaffected and snapped his brother’s neck.

Another dream had Sam looking his Saturday night best in the all-white suit that we know meant Lucifer was back in residence. Dean approached him with remorse and knew he had no choice. His brother was in the grips of a monster, unable to be saved. He shot him in the head. With Lucifer running the show, however, the tables quickly turned and it didn’t go well.

In the one I found most disturbing and dramatic, Dean again bore the Mark of Cain. He threw Sam through the bunker railing that has seen so much. He lifted him by the throat and plunged the First Blade into Sam with satisfaction. It was a tough thing to watch.

With Sam having visions of being back on demon blood and killing Dean, being Lucifer and being killed by Dean, and Dean having the mark of Cain and killing Sam, he realized that he may have a connection to Chuck’s mind through the wound they share.

He came to believe he may be seeing Chuck’s author mind in motion. Toying with horrible ways to pit the brothers against each other, it was like Becky said, more of the same. I suspect in the long run, it will be more creative than something we’ve seen before.

Hopefully, this glimpse into Chuck’s mind will be a big-ticket bonus a little further down the road. Maybe they will even use it to get in there with him via dreamwalking or something. This is also like having Michael trapped in Dean’s mind. Will Chuck realize it all and use it against them in that same way? Whether it’s a one-way mirror or not remains to be seen.

1. Fight God?

Once Dean told Sam that Lilith mentioned Chuck had a favorite way to end the story, the visions seemed a lot more serious. Lilith said that Chuck’s go-to was brother against brother, one way or another, one of them would need to kill the other.

It was part of his instructions to her to make sure Dean and Sam witnessed the werewolf brothers pitted against each other, one deciding to destroy the other because he had become a monster. She assumed it was foreshadowing. I assume she is right.

We saw a similar event last episode when they witnessed the young vampire give himself over as a monster because he wanted to do the right thing. I thought this was great writing on the part of the Supernatural geniuses, leaving a door to forgiveness of Jack and Castiel. But it could have also been more of this plan, to lead them gently into the mindset of self-sacrifice.

The boys wonder if Chuck is also in Sam’s mind, but one thing is clear: all of these potential endings are more than just dreams. Chuck is still out to get them, he wants them to kill each other, and he’s writing it all out.

There’s only one thing left to do if they want to stop those visions from coming to pass and actually have their freedom. And it isn’t as if the idea of fighting God is taken lightly. Dean asked Sam in earnest, how could they possibly take that on?

Fortunately, Supernatural has left several breadcrumbs out along the way. At one point, it was thought that God was the most powerful being in the universe. But through the seasons, we have seen more than on occasion when he seemed to be afraid of something or someone.

We know he wanted his gun destroyed. And we know he personally destroyed Jack. Death said at one time that when the time came, he would reap God. And he certainly needed help from the Winchesters when he was faced with his sister’s wrath. He locked her up, as well as Lucifer, the Leviathan, and let’s not overlook the Shedim.

Was he simply punishing these folks or do they hold a threat to him? Amara has already made it clear that he needs her and that she is more powerful than he is. Both she and Death may be older. And let’s not forget, she has a serious sweet spot for Dean Winchester, and now for this planet.

I continue to put my money on Amara being some part of the solution in the long run. Perhaps we will see that God is not himself and there can be a way to save him. Maybe Jack, the new most powerful being in the universe, as it has been said, will be allowed to return and make his true mark. One way or another, it looks like a true apocalypse is on the rise.
