5 best moments from Supernatural Season 15, Episode 3

Supernatural is outdoing itself for Season 15. With reappearances and deaths, The Rupture had us at the edge of our seats. Check out these top 5 moments from Episode 3 of the final season.

Before we go any farther, be aware that since this is a discussion of the five best moments out of the Supernatural Season 15, Episode 3, we are going to have some fresh spoilers. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, head over to The CW app to catch up. We have been seeing characters come back from the far reaches of the universe for the first few episodes of the final season of Supernatural. We’ve got friends returning from trips, we’ve got people showing up who we thought we’d been long finished with, and we’ve even had demons in familiar bodies.

Now in Episode 3, we’ve got some of them already making their way out of the story. Is it for good? That remains to be seen. Supernatural is big on resurrection, after all. But that’s not our only hope, either. Will these characters stay where they’re expected, or could there be more for them, perhaps in their new dwellings?

For now, we’re going to dive into the best of the best. The top five moments from this episode of Supernatural are ones to remember. Not only did we have a lot of anticipation, but I have to admit I shed a few tears. Breaking up is hard to do, after all.

5. Ketch’s broken heart

We saw him show up just at the exact moment he was needed on Supernatural last week in “Raising Hell.” With his gun stolen from The British Men of Letters, Ketch shot iron flakes at ghosts and helped save the day more than once.

His fate was uncertain after he was shot by Dean after being possessed by Jack the Ripper. But, given the look of endearment from Rowena, we thought maybe things would work out for the two of them later on. He was off to the hospital and we were cool for the moment.

It wasn’t surprising to see that the demon Ardat, said to have hired Ketch to locate and kill Belphegor, showed up to ask why he hadn’t done what she asked. Ketch seemed to have a pretty good relationship with her, despite her no nonsense attitude with him.

When the chips fell, she went after him quickly. Having been shot, he wasn’t on top of his game and she quickly had him in a chokehold. At that point, I wondered how this was going to play out. I mean, it is Ketch we’re talking about. He seems to have a weird way of dodging, well, everything.

But not this time. Ardat asked him if he would give up the location of his friends at any price. “Not at any price,” he replied with a bummer face on. She looked a little sad herself, before she went ahead and straight-up ripped out his heart. The two of them had both seemed a little down in the dumps that this was the way it was going. It was almost like they maybe had a thing at one time. Hm.

Yes, it was dramatic. Ketch saw the heart; it was beating. He looked at the heart, at her, at the heart, at her. It seemed to go on for a long time for someone whose heart was out. But she must have been getting tired of holding him by the throat because she gave that final yank and snapped the artery, dropping him to the floor. Bye Ketch. We’ll miss you, buddy.

4. Spell it out

Of course, when it comes to magic on Supernatural, one name always comes to mind. Rowena showed up, as well and we were all really glad. They did some stuff with her soul bomb (or soul catcher, as Dean has renamed it for these purposes), but there was still a lot of trouble.

Luckily, she stuck around, as we knew from our sneak peeks of “The Rupture.” I was loving the images of her in her lovely pink gown and all too soon, it made a lot of sense why the Supernatural geniuses had her looking her finest. But we’ll get to that in a minute.

We saw her collect her trinkets and ingredients to try to reinforce the wall holding in the spirits of Hell as the spell cast by Belphegor was fading. She said if all went well they’d be home in time for tea.

When they headed down to “a nice protected space,” as Castiel put it, aka the crypt in the graveyard they never wanted to see again, things got witchy really fast. She was working at top speed and I always love it when they make her eyes purple. That tells me that she’s really tapping into that supernatural witch power.

So it was surprising when she got all flustered, started to fade, and eventually hit the ground in dismay. And all this just as the spell was starting to work. They were even excited for a quick second before she delivered the bad news: “We’re all going to die.”

Coming from her, that’s pretty damning. She’s always been so “whatever” about everything that comes their way. Her magic is strong, even maybe the strongest. She’s been around for centuries and seen it all. She’s died, transformed, been possessed, and more. So to hear her say this was a real bummer for us all.

She said that although it was working at first, her connection to the wall gave her the feelings of the dead attached to it. She felt their anger and desperation and believed it was just too late for her to do anything about it in this way. These damned souls were damn relentless and she knew it.

3. The crook’s crook

I’ve had my eyes on this fella since he showed up conveniently when our buddies were first trapped in the crypt. Like me, Castiel has been giving him the side-eye all through this season of Supernatural, as well. We’ve both been waiting for the moment he would make his real motives known and that day has finally come.

He told them he needed someone to come down to Hell with him to provide some “muscle.” But we all knew he was full of it, as they say. I mean, it was all too convenient that he just happened to know the spell they needed in order to contain the Hell troubles unleashed by Chuck. And now here he was again, at the exact moment, with the perfect plan to help them after Rowena’s first attempt didn’t do the trick.

He warned Cass that he wouldn’t like it, and he wasn’t wrong. Who would like it? It meant going to Hell and all this other perfectly timed stuff. But it was a distraction, wasn’t it? I mean yes, his plan would do the trick, as it were, but it would also happen to place him as the new King of Hell. You know, Sam said a while ago that anyone who wanted that job would be going through him.

But since no one had that figured out yet, they set up the Belphegor solution to send him and Castiel to Hell to get Lilith’s crook. Well, that wasn’t the only crook in the story, as it turned out. Since he needed Castiel to read the angelic verses, he had to play nice with him at first.

But the first instant there was discord, we saw the real Belphegor emerge. After a quick fight with Ardat leaving us with just a dot of information about him, Belphegor went on to suck all the souls of Hell back down and into himself.

Man, I knew it had to go the way it did, but it was such a sad scene to see Castiel destroy Jack’s body that way. We saw his sadness about it and I felt his pain. The symbolic destruction of that last little shred of him was like another suggestion from the Supernatural geniuses that we might be actually done with Jack for good. I disagree, however, let the record show.

We haven’t heard anything from that scene in the Empty with Billie, and with Jack on the poster for the season, it just seems underwhelming for it to fizzle out that way. Plus, Castiel is now off on his wandering way, so who knows where he’s going to turn up, right? Showing back up with Jack would certainly be a great redemption, as long as Dean has worked his way through the dead mother blame game by then. Stay tuned, I suppose.

2. The break-up

I can’t tell you how I was torn about making this #1 on our list, but I just had to hold the spot for something else. But for me and a lot of Supernatural fans, this was an epic moment. Not only did it happen, but it meant much more in an underlying tone.

And what’s more, the writers of Supernatural are going to HAVE to fix it. If they don’t, we’re talking some Game-of-Thrones-level let down for the SPN Family, I fear. Yes, that’s right, it’s the un(officially)discussed bond between Dean and Castiel. It’s no secret they are family and mean so much to each other, but this scene really formed up like a true break-up.

Dean and his Dean-behavior finally did it this time. We’ve seen him cranky and accusatory before, it’s his nature, after all. But his own pain has gotten in the way of seeing the deep horror that Castiel (and everyone else, for that matter), is also suffering.

This has been a theme so far in this final season of Supernatural, even earlier, to be honest. With the death of Mary, Dean turned a corner. Once he had the big letdown of Chuck being a big, fat jerk, he seemed to just turn it all off. Thinking only of how angry he is, he has his heart set on his personal freedom from worrying about the world anymore.

This has been showing from when he turned his back on soulless Jack’s despair and now, Castiel has had enough. Having been basically forced into hanging out with a demon in his baby Jack’s bodysuit, having to jump through hoops and being bossed around by Dean. Cass has tried endlessly to turn to his bestie Dean, with no avail.

When he confronted Dean at the bunker after trying one last time to be cordial and sensitive, Dean lashed out, of course. “My powers are failing, and I’ve tried to talk to you over and over and you just don’t want to hear it, you don’t care. I’m dead to you.” *Wipes tears*.

Cass asked him if he blamed him for Mary’s death. Dean nodded with a “well?” attitude, so Castiel came to the final thought that he needed to go.

It seems like Dean hears nothing but the sounds of his soul being crushed and has given Castiel no regard, no forgiveness, and plenty of crap. He’s been treating him like a naughty pet dog and giving the message that he doesn’t care at all about what becomes him. We all know it. Castiel gets the message.

When Dean asked, “Where are you going?” in a way that indicated maybe he realized he had been very Chuck-like in his own behavior, it was still like a dad and a defiant teen. But Castiel confirmed that there was nothing left for him here now that he was dead to Dean. And that prideful man sat in silence, letting him go.

I could see it on his face, just the slightest bit, he doesn’t want Cass to go. He didn’t mean to hurt him and now this will hopefully be the final straw that makes him look in the mirror. Castiel didn’t say bye to Sam or anything, which further leads us to the idea that he was really there for Dean all along.

But I think after what we’ve all lost in these last episodes, Sam is not going to be happy with Dean for letting this happen. “What’s happened to you, Dean? First Jack, now Cass? Since when did we give up on family so easily?” Something like that is what I expect to hear from Sam when he learns what happened.

At the same time, Castiel is surely going to hurt more and more. He needs Dean, and he does carry the guilt of some of the events that have transpired. Maybe he will set out on a mission to redeem himself to his brothers and find a way to “make things right.” Something about Amara, maybe? Hm.

1. Hell hath no fury

She requested “nothing too exotic,” such as Lavender, Myrrh, and the skull of an owl. No biggie. but yes, it sure was. I did notice Rowena’s very heavy involvement in the last two episodes. And that dress she was wearing was certainly smashing for a day in the crypt. But who could know just where Supernatural would take this?

Well, she sure gave it her best in trying to restore the barrier around the town. then she gave it another go with her ingredients to create the Hell bomb. She had made the soul catcher and diffused the first stages of the incident at hand. But when push came to shove, after Belphegor turned demony, Rowena found herself faced with the ultimate sacrifice.

Of course, we know that Supernatural was serious long ago when we learned that her forever death was meant to come at the hands of Sam Winchester. At that time, we couldn’t imagine we’d end up here, but I knew it would take a serious moment for that to be the case. I wondered for a second when we saw Michael!Rowena emerge, if that would be the day, but not yet.

Once she said she needed an assistant and had dibs on Sam, I started to suspect we might be in for it this time. Suddenly the pretty dress seemed more appropriate. How sad and tragic and memorable that she did this for them and for the world. There was a time when Supernatural gave us the understanding that Rowena was incapable of loving.

Still, even having an idea of what was coming, Supernatural gave her the legitimate focus and death scene that she deserved. Rowena dug out her last sachet and convinced Sam that he absolutely had to stab her in the gut if he wanted his brother, and the world, to survive.

While I always say that death doesn’t really mean anything on Supernatural, this did have a rarely seen feeling of finality to it. Not only was she all fancy but tin retrospect, the episodes leading up to this moment could have even been fully centered around her final journey.

We even heard the most genuine, old-world Scottish Highland music playing as she gracefully walked off the edge of The Rupture and to her forever death, hitting the floor of Hell with a significant thud. Slow-motion and tears were all present.

At long last, this self-fulfilling prophecy came to pass and the dramatic, emotional exit was well done. Sam took Rowena’s life, and in the process, together they saved the world. For now. Rest in peace, Rowena MacLeod. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. Are you in The Empty now?
