5 things we need from Sam Winchester in Supernatural Season 15
Supernatural Season 15 is the last, and that means we have a lot of needs for Sam Winchester. Here are five things we need to see from him.
Since Supernatural Season 15 is the last season, there are many wants and wishes. There are also some very specific needs. It’s time to delve into the things that we need to see from Sam Winchester in the final season.

I’ve already delved into this once before. I’ll let you read that post, as many of these wants and needs remain. We need to see more growth as a leader, while also continuing to build that bond with Castiel. However, there are other needs for the younger Winchester brother.
Here are five more things we need in Supernatural Season 15.

5. A more integral part in the lore
One thing that has annoyed me since about Season 8 is the lack of use of Sam Winchester when it comes to the lore. After being the one to attempt to close the Gates of Hell forever, Sam seemed to be more of the backup. Now, I’m admittedly a Dean!Girl, but I still see the one-sidedness of things in recent seasons.
When it was the Mark of Cain, it was Dean. When it came to sacrifices for the world, Dean was the one to attempt to take down Amara. Season 8 was so long ago now.
Just in recent seasons, it’s like the writers have forgotten about some of the things Sam has been through. He’s had to push his feelings aside for the story to focus on Dean. It’s time that changed in Season 15. Make him more integral in this final season.
4. A chance to really grieve for Mary Winchester
At the end of Supernatural Season 14, Mary Winchester was killed. The brothers had to move straight into battle mode, trying to find Jack. In Dean’s case it was to enact revenge, and Sam was pulled along for the ride.
Sam didn’t really get the chance to grieve for his mother. Just as he was getting to know her and find a way to bond with her, she was ripped away from him. He needs time to go through the emotions, deal with the loss that it is for him.
Because death happens so much on the show and “dead doesn’t mean dead,” it’s hard to just accept it and grieve. Too often, we’re thrown into the opinion that it doesn’t matter because the characters will be back eventually. However, Sam grieved for Bobby and now it’s time to show that same level of grief for his mother.
3. His struggle with fake free will
The last season also told us that free will was never actually free will. All that fighting the brothers did to rip up destiny was for nothing. God was always writing the story and playing with his Winchester puppets.
This is something we need to see Sam deal with. I get the feeling that Sam will take it harder than Dean considering everything he did in Season 5 in an attempt to subvert “destiny.” It turns out that going to Lucifer’s Cage and dealing with the hell that came after when he was brought back was his destiny after all. It was the new draft that God created.
If (and when) God is taken care of, we need to see the questions about free will moving forward. Is there such a thing as free will in the universe?
2. Wanting to fight to right wrongs, especially against Adam Milligan!
There have been so many wrongs over the years. We’ve watched the Winchesters use people as bait or just forget about them because they don’t serve their bigger picture at the time. Sam is the most empathetic of the two so has done it less, but there are a few people he’s forgotten about or abandoned along the way.
One of those is Adam Winchester. While some may not think Adam’s storyline needs closure, it does. Except for a mention in Season 6 of Dean choosing Sam over Adam and a brief mention in Season 10 in the 200th episode, Adam has been forgotten about.
We know that Jake Abel is returning to the show for the final season. Please can it be because Sam is trying to right the wrongs of the past?
1. A chance of a normal life
I get the feeling that this isn’t going to be possible in Supernatural Season 15, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to wish it. Sam Winchester wanted a normal life from the very beginning. He didn’t want to be pigeonholed into the family business.
Things have changed along the way. In the 300th episode, Sam accepted the life of the hunter. He knew that everything that has happened has been for a reason, and a lot of the times that reason has been to make sure other people get their normal lives. But doesn’t Sam deserve one after all this time?
Both Winchester brothers do in a way, but Sam more so. Dean never really wanted that normal life. If he could, I’m sure he’d hunt anyway. Even when he had a normal life, he looked out for any signs of monsters and demons. Sam walked away entirely, and that’s what makes the pull back into the world so bittersweet.
Sam deserves that chance of happiness and a normal life after everything that’s happened.
