Good Omens has debuted on Amazon Prime Video. Supernatural fans can’t help but notice similarities with certain characters and here’s why.

If you feel like you recognize the Crowley in Good Omens and picture Mark Sheppard now and then, there’s a reason for that. Eric Kripke has officially confirmed that the Crowley (pronounced Crow-ley in the Amazon Prime Original) in Good Omens was inspiration for his own character.

And yes, Good Omens inspired Supernatural. While the series with Michael Sheen and David Tennant is only just out, the novel that the show was based on has been out for many years. It was a novel Kripke says he read and it had a huge influence on him. He’s not the only one as Jon Hamm admitted in a recent interview that it was the first novel he read without being forced to by school.

However, it’s not all about Crowley. There’s another particular character in the Prime series that served as inspiration. That would be the Antichrist, who isn’t quite the “Antichrist” that we know from literature in Supernatural. Yes, we’re on about the character Jessie in Season 5.

As you get into the later seasons of the series, you’ll still see some inspiration from the novel by Sir Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. However, the development isn’t quite the same as the Kripke years.

The best thing about learning the truth is seeing Neil Gaiman respond. After Kripke admitted on Twitter that the characters from the apocalypse-set book were inspirations for his show, Gaiman shared this:

This isn’t the first time that Kripke has shared his inspirations for his show about two traveling brothers, hunting monsters and saving people. He also shared, while adapting The House with a Clock in Its Walls, that it also served as inspiration for Supernatural.

And it’s certainly inspiration rather than direct copies. When you watch everything back-to-back, you’ll see the differences as well as the similarities. While Kripke jokes about stealing from Gaiman, it’s not theft but is a show of love for the original works.
