5 Best moments from Supernatural Season 14, Episode 20

Supernatural has outdone itself this time. The Season 14 finale was explosive and twisted, to say the very least. Let’s look at the moments that stood out in the chaos and charm of Moriah.

I mean, what can I say? First, I will tell you this. From here forward, we are dealing with complete and total spoiler material. If you have not yet seen the Season 14 finale of Supernatural, please do yourself a favor and head over to do that first.

Also, on the final page, you will even find a spoiler for Game of Thrones (“The Long Night”), so please be alert. There’s an extra warning there so you can skip the paragraph if needed.

You can take a few minutes to read through our recap and review while you try to pull yourself back together. Whenever you’re good with this as it is, let’s talk about what the heck happened here.

But what does it all hecking mean? We saw and heard things that just should not be. This episode was a total erasure of many previously firm standards. And the questions we have now will surely carry our sordid little minds on through until the final season begins later this year *tear*.

We knew it was going to be a finale that was perhaps the most epic of the entire series, to date. Misha Collins gave us this teaser via Twitter, but of course, we all wondered if it was hype. Well no, it was not.

Can you even believe how that all went down? I mean, everything they did, all the years they worked, every hunt, every death, every torture and tear. Worthless? I’m sorry, I just cannot get down with that being reality.

I have mentioned multiple times in the last few weeks that I have had suspicions about some of the plot lines happening through Supernatural. With this newest character twist — I’m sorry, not a twist but really quite a total mangling — what can we really believe in anymore?

There has to be something amiss here. Please, ____ let this be some glamour to teach them something. If you’re anything like me, you’re blown away by what you saw and learned, and even what you suddenly unlearned. The ultimate cliffhanger has been put into place and now we wait.

So there isn’t much we can do about any of that, and all of my personal questions are so incredibly twisted and crazy that I think they’re better suited to posts of their own. And all the foreshadowing, as well. Like how “Moriah” is totally self-explanatory in retrospect.

5. This badge is fake

I’m going to break us in softly and go with the one truly hilarious bit of this Supernatural madness we experienced. Sam and Dean Winchester often play FBI agents on the show and this was their character again as they went on the hunt for Jack.

When the episode opened, we picked up where we left off last week, with Jack and his Twilight Zone eyes having just escaped the Ma’lak box. As Sam, Dean, and Castiel looked on with concern, Jack put up his power hand.

With barely an effort, he hit them with the stun gun vibes, throwing all three against the wall in temporary freeze mode as he shouted, “You lied to me!” and vanished. Needless to say, there was some concern.

After a quick confrontation between Dean and Cass where it became obvious they’re still at odds, Cass took off and Dean turned to Sam. They agree that it is time to do something. They needed to find Jack, immediately.

We found them rolling up into a place called Mirror Universe, where they develop facial and voice recognition software. This was Sam’s super plan to try and FBI their way into the system to see if Jack turned up on their servers somewhere.

Meanwhile, a disgruntled and sad Jack strolled through a city street where he noticed that basically everyone is lying. “It’s not you, it’s me,” “She’s just a friend from work,” and other lame, common cover stories were heard.

When Jack had all he could take, he shouted “Stop lying!” and we saw a quick reset happen to everyone around him. What we quickly realized upon coming back to Sam and Dean, was that this actually happened everywhere.

This is where it got fun for a second. It might have gone unnoticed when Sam told Dean to drop the act and admit he’s a geek, but it didn’t take long to see everything was totally jacked up. Pun intended.

“Hi, I’m Dean Winchester, I’m looking for the Devil’s son, this badge is fake,” Dean said when he tried a second time to lie to the front desk attendant. He was as shocked as she was and went straight back to Sam.

His suspicions were immediately confirmed when he asked Sam, “who’s your favorite singer?” and he answered with “Celine Dion.” He tried another time, and another, to say “Elvis,” but it kept coming out, “Celine Dion.”

Pretty quickly, they realized Jack was behind this mess when the television aired newscasters discussing the fact that the president had just spent two hours talking about his taxes and ties to Russia and North Korea. There was even mention of our dearly departed, Crowley, and a demon deal.

Now they knew the situation was much more urgent than they thought. They went on a fast hunt for Jack with the software as the office workers around them fell into raging insanity, unable to lie to each other.

Between one guy being sick of the other guy eating his yogurt for the third time, to the lady who was still mad about her parking space, they began to attack each other. The truth was spilling out over the place and the only person who was OK with it was the lady who proclaimed she was “The Stapler Queen.”

The situation was dire and the hunt was now a worldwide epidemic on top of everything else. They knew this was Jack’s doing, but they didn’t know where he was.

4. Granny Kline

Jack spent this episode of Supernatural feeling defeated. While he demonstrated his power several times, we also saw and heard how empty and alone he truly does, and has felt. He confessed to Castiel that he had nothing left inside. “I don’t feel anything,” he told him.

During this special time in the graveyard with Cass, Jack told his whole story relating to his feelings and experiences in the recent time. He said he had tried to do the right things over, and over. “All I ever wanted was to be good,” he mentioned for the thousandth time on Supernatural.

This has been Jack’s constant character conflict. With his mother and father being two ends of the spectrum, he’s always known he could choose either path. Castiel has always counseled him on how to make the right choices. Now, without a soul, he simply doesn’t have the compass to ever know the difference.

Jack tells Cass that he wants to love himi back, but can’t. And Cass says something to him that I have been wondering about for some time. “Not yet,” he says. Castiel is an angel, by nature. He also dosn’t have a soul. Yet he has come to develop loyalties, emotion, become human in his heart. Why couldn’t Jack have a similar experience in time, even without a soul?

Maybe we’ll never know why the Supernatural geniuses didn’t take that easy way out (yes, we know why), but it’s not the thing. But with this storyline at its greatest height, Jack felt he would never find a solution. Naturally, he looked into his heart and thought of the only connection he always held onto. When it comes to his goodness, Kelly has always been the key.

Naturally, to find a piece of that, Jack ends up at his grandparents’ house again. During the time when the world couldn’t lie, he showed up at the door and was met by his grandmother, who was visually afraid of him.

He came inside and spoke to her like a full out psycho, looking from a human’s perspective. We saw this happen in the beginning, but it wasn’t until the conversation later, with Castiel, that we were able to discover how it all turned out.

Jack had told her that he enjoyed their conversation before, and he wanted to talk again. But she was coming at him with nothing but truth, just as he had wished of humankind. She was angry and afraid. She raised her voice and lashed out.

After their last visit, she and her husband had become suspicious of Kelly’s situation. They made some calls, she told him. And the truth had come out to a degree. Kelly was missing and feared dead by those she worked with. Naturally, they assumed Jack was behind that disappearance.

“What did you do?!” she yelled at him over, and over. In the early part of the episode, we were left with Jack’s yellow eyes as he said to her, “Stop!” That was it for the time being, but finally, he told Castiel the ending. Personally, I wondered if it was going to be another “accident.” But what do you know? It was different this time.

This was a wonderful write-in by the Supernatural geniuses, giving us the understanding that Jack had both ability to learn from his mistakes and ability to control himself, after all. Not this time, no more accidents.

Castiel had the obvious question for Jack at this point in the story. “What did you do?” Jack took us back to what we had seen in the beginning and this time the scene continued. After he glowed and told her to stop, she was startled, of course.

“What are you?” she asked, trembling. He let down his glow and simply walked out. “I ran,” he told Castiel, who breathed a sigh of relief (as did I). Poor Jack, trying to be happy, trying to hold onto his goodness and just lost. Lost in an act of goodwill to save those he loved.

And the saddest bit of all, watching Castiel, Jack’s most loyal fan of all time. The true pain on his face, the true concern, every time there’s a sketchy situation with him. Castiel, the one who isn’t human, is the most human of them all.

Firm and willing to stand by his family to the very death, and beyond. I love his ways, he’s the best choice of anyone to be Jack’s guardian and guide. If he can’t save Jack, no one can.

3. The end?

Jack has been fighting a battle with his body and soul for what seems like his entire life. First, he was sick, then he lost his powers, then he was better but still powerless. Now he has power, but no soul. Of all the difficulties we’ve seen him face, one thing has always stood. He just wanted to help.

Unfortunately, he’s already merely a toddler in reality and his idea of right and wrong still hadn’t fully developed before all of this started going downhill. But now, without a soul, he is completely at the mercy of well… everyone. From Duma to Mary, everyone has tried to tell him what’s best.

Above all, his three dads have been by his side through it all. While Dean’s first thought was to get rid of the nephilim, Sam quickly gave him a chance, ultimately bringing Dean around. But more than anyone on the show, Castiel believed in Jack. His faith in him has been “unwaivering.” Even now, he has stood in his defense to the bitter end.

But after everything Jack has caused, something must be done. There was hardly a second thought for Dean to pick up the magical God gun (I’ll get back to that) and go after Jack on his own. He even had the knowledge that pulling the trigger would take his own life at the same time.

Finally, we see Jack and Castiel having a beautiful, long overdue moment at a cemetery. Jack tells Castiel from the bottom of his burned out soul that he wants to love him, but he just can’t. Before he finishes explaining all the goodness that still blooms in his beautiful mind, Dean appears.

Sam is right behind him but Dean is resolved. I was not surprised to see Jack go to his knees and look Dean in the eyes, saying, “I understand,” once more. He knew as hard as he tried, the damage he was causing was not going to improve.

Well, what do you know? Dean finally has that moment of clarity we’ve all been waiting for. Jack is still family. He knows it. He lowers the gun, said to be the only thing in creation that can take Jack’s life. But guess what? Chuck doesn’t like that.

That’s right, Chuck. He wants Dean to kill Jack, and himself, at the same time. That’s how it is supposed to go! Well, all Hell breaks loose because Dean and Sam really understand just how much Chuck has actually been messing with them their whole entire lives (all of them).

Well, at the end of the day, Dean does not pull the trigger, but that doesn’t actually matter. With a snap of his bratty, bitter fingers, Chuck smites Jack. All three of his fathers watch as Jack burns out like the best of them. Gone. Charred eye holes, wing marks on the ground and all. Dead.

Castiel was destroyed. Sam and Dean are blown away by all of what has just come to pass. So many lies and so many truths all at once. But in the end, Jack was gone. And we would expect that this was the end. But…no.

At the very last moment, we see Jack, in the Empty, waking up. There is The Shadow, who draws a smile on itself. I thought it all seemed peaceful and then there was more. Billie pipes up, (Chuck is not a fan of hers). When Jack asked what was happening, Billie said, “Yeah, about that. We should talk.” There you have it, one of the absolutely epic pieces of this cliffhanger finale.

2. Team Free Will

This theme has been present in Supernatural for a very long time. The fall of Castiel through the story of this world gave us the understanding, as he gained it, that we all have a choice. This has continued from character to character, situation to situation. “We always have a choice.”

Jack can decide to follow after Lucifer or pave his own path. Dean can decide to erase his woman’s memory so she can have a good life. A demon can decide to love an angel. And Dean can decide if he wants to shoot Jack in the head or not.

Poor Chuck has surely always found that free will to be his annoyance. While he claims that Sam and Dean are his guys, he always takes pleasure when his story goes as written. When we first met him, when he was merely a prophet, Sam and Dean learned that they didn’t have a  have a choice.

Chuck covertly reaffirmed to them that no matter what they did, what he wrote in his book was sure to happen. They even turned to him to learn what was to befall them in days to come. But in the long run, they remembered once again, that they could decide.

And so there they were, gun to Jack’s head, Sam, Castiel, and Chuck looked on as they all waited for Dean to exact his will. And he sure did. When Jack spoke to Dean and told him that he understood, that he had been right about him all along, Dean realized this was not the way.

He tossed the gun to the ground and refused. Oh boy, Chuck lost it. “Pick it up, pick it up,” he commanded Dean. Then, in his little baby fit, he let it all slip. “This isn’t how the story’s supposed to end!” Well, Castiel heard it, Sam and Dean heard it.l They were all like, “hold up… wut?”

But the real boo-boo on Chuck’s part came when he tried to coerce Dean with the promise that if he shot Jack (and therefore himself, let’s not overlook), he would bring Mary back. Well, that didn’t go as he planned, either, not at all.

I think, if I know anything about Dean, what he actually heard was, “If you don’t shoot him, I will let your mother stay dead.” He may have also heard such things as, “I took your mother and I can give her back but I’m not,” as well as, “I have done all of this to you on purpose.” Let God’s will be done? Dean thinks not.

Well, we know Sam heard these things because he immediately lashed out. In fact, what we then saw was akin to a pack of vampires feasting on a body and hearing a little whimper nearby. They all turned on Chuck and stood up against him together like a brick wall of free will.

And that’s not all. Not only were they choosing not to enact Chuck’s story here in the graveyard, but they were kind of mad. They were ready to let their will be done. Yes, they verbally spanked him like the spoiled baby that he seems to be.

Now, I’m just going to throw this in here because it came to mind, but Amara seemed to be a little fond of Dean. She also seemed to have a bit of a grudge against God, as we saw. The only reason she didn’t destroy everything before was because Chuck agreed to go away with her.

He left her playing Keno in Reno to come raise Hell (literally) with her very favorite human. So, I wonder if she knows about all this? How will she react when she realizes that God has decided to shut down the show? We’ll maybe talk about that later.

But back to the situation at hand. Dean wasn’t having any part of Chuck’s little fantasy bedtime story anymore. “God or no God, you go to Hell.” Well, this made Chuck snap, literally. He did what he did and everyone was devastated. But Sam, he was feeling mad.

Impulsively, he picked up that God gun, the amazing weapon that Chuck said could kill (or reciprocate) anything in the universe. And there was Chuck’s story playing out in reverse. Father and son, the gun, and Sam pulled the trigger — at Chuck.

Well, a shoulder shot isn’t going to take out the Lord of all creation, but it sure did make him mad. So he snaps again, and here comes the rest.

1. The Sam and Dean show

DANG IT, CHUCK. So um, all those crazy angels appear to have been right all along. As it turns out, Chuck is a brat. In a nutshell, he fully confessed that he does, in fact, go around making worlds and stepping out of them.

I was extra amused at the fact that one that is entirely populated with squirrels. Squirrels. He even watches them like we watch them wondering if he’s somewhere watching them. Chuck is a writer. Writers lie. And there’s always the matter of that.

SPN Hunters‘ Alexandria addressed the possibility that this phrase we heard through the finale might be a huge clue to our future on Supernatural. I agree; it’s something to keep in mind as we go through our theory-packed Hellatus this summer. And it’s fully in line with my deep and continuous concerns that things are not what they seem in the last several episodes.

But as it would seem, some things are exactly as they seem. For example, when Michael said that God was a writer who made worlds, discarded them, and walked away to make a new one, he was right. That sucks. Chuck is the new Big Bad? Well after this, I would freaking well say so.

Chuck confessed fully to Sam that he watches them when he’s not there. He says that they are his favorite show. And he also tells Sam that of all the Sam and Deans, they are his favorite. Sam doesn’t think that’s very cool and he gets a tiny bit mad, in fact.

This is only compounded after Dean finds out the truth at the graveyard when he refused to shoot Jack and Chuck got all flustered because his story was messed up now. Yes, he literally threw a temper tantrum and it ended with him killing Jack, himself.

And do you know, he was most annoyed because it was supposed to be Dean, “The father killing his own son! This is Abraham and Isaac. It’s epic.” He said it wasn’t how the story was supposed to end. This made Dean super Dean-like. He told Chuck off and Sam was reignited.

When they put it all together that Chuck not only allowed everything they’d been through to happen but created it on purpose, they were absolutely enraged. So, in an unexpected turn, Sam picked up the amazing gun God made to kill Jack and fired it at Chuck.

Yes, it was impulsive and he would have died, as well, if it had landed as planned. But he only shot Chuck (and himself) in the shoulder. But… Chuck was mad. “Fine!” he yelled like a three-year-old. So he went ahead and snapped his finger and started the apocalypse. Yep.

All went dark. Zombies started coming up out of the ground. ZOMBIES. Every hunt they’d ever been on was for nothing because through a series of scenes, we saw some memorable entities showing up. The crying woman in white from the side of the road, John Wayne Gacy clown, Bloody Mary, you name it.

I don’t know if you’re a Game of Thrones fan or not, but I was totally thinking of the Battle of Winterfell when I saw all this happening. I mean, what do you do? How frustrating and defeating, right? I mean, you look around and everyone you just laid to waste just stands up and looks at you like, “LOL.” And for sure this would be an idea opener for a Walking Dead crossover.

So here we are, ladies and gentlemen. The epic finale came to pass — Misha was right and God confirmed it. The world is ending. Jack is dead. But everyone else isn’t? This will be weird. I suppose this means all Hell has actually broken loose. And now, the summer. What on this sweet Earth will happen when we come back from this final Hellatus?

With God as our likely final Big Bad, I can think of no better challenge for the Winchesters and the world of Supernatural. Having to deal with Jack, the most powerful entity in the universe, was tricky. But God? Who can fix that? Who is bigger than God? I have only one idea, but we’ll save that for another post.
