Supernatural Season 14 is over and it’s time to look back ahead of the season dropping on Netflix. Just how do each of the episodes stand up? Here’s a grading of each of the 20 episodes.

With Supernatural Season 14 over, it’s time to look back. The episodes will soon be on Netflix, and there are high chances that you’ll want to watch the best episodes first. That means gradings are in order.

To grade episodes, I always look at the episodes a second time so I avoid the initial impressions I got. This is about the acting, the writing, the cinematography, and the overall feel. What I don’t do for grading is look at everyone else’s opinions. After all, this is my grade for the episodes.

This season, when I do the ranking of the episodes, I’m not necessarily going to look at the grading. Ranking the Supernatural Season 14 episodes will be based on other’s opinions as well as my own.

Grading Supernatural Season 14 episodes

Episode 1: Stranger in a Strange Land

Grade: A

I’ll admit that I adored the Michael!Dean storyline and I’m not sorry about that. Sure, the show is about the Winchester brothers and there is something off when they’re not together, but at the same time, I want to see something exciting and different. I want to see a storyline fully play out.

While it didn’t last, it didn’t stop me from fully enjoying “Stranger in a Strange Land.” Jensen Ackles was unrecognizable as Michael and this was a chance to see Sam as a leader, willing to do what it took to get his brother back. Plus, we got a first look at Mary really stepping up as a mother to her sons.

Episode 2: Gods and Monsters

Grade: B+

This is another episode that I fully enjoyed. Even though we lost the Michael!Dean storyline by the end, there were plenty of excellent moments leading up to this point. We got to see the initial creation of the supermonsters and saw how powerful Michael actually is. Without lifting a finger, he was able to kill a vampire.

The ending was also an excellent twist. You just knew that the Michael!Dean storyline wasn’t completely over.

Episode 3: The Scar

Grade: B-

More from Supernatural

This wasn’t the strongest episode but it was a good one. It brought the Wayward Sisters storyline back, helping to give us some sort of look at what was going to happen in the spin-off.

With Dark!Kaia in the picture, Jody had a chance to learn more about the initial plan. There was the opportunity to see why Dark!Kaia hated Dean (it wasn’t just about Michael) and see a look of guilt on Dean’s face.

Episode 4: Mint Condition

Grade: A+

When it comes to specials, Supernatural has surprisingly only done one Halloween special up to this point. Mind you, as Sam says, it’s like Halloween every day for the Winchester brothers. And that’s what made this episode so great.

It wasn’t actually a Halloween episode but an All Saints’ Day special. We got to see other versions of Dean and Sam and we had a chance to see both Winchesters in their elements. There was everything right about this episode, even after multiple watches.

Episode 5: Nightmare Logic

Grade: C

This is one of my least favorite episodes. While bringing in the djinn with suped up powers was good, the overall focus of the episode wasn’t great. The strongest part was getting that confirmation that something wasn’t quite right with Dean.

What I didn’t like was Apocalypse Bobby putting so much blame on Sam. However, Mary really stepped up by putting her faith in him. And I loved Dean chewing Bobby out.

Episode 6: Optimism

Grade: B+

Coming off the back of “Nightmare Logic,” “Optimism” was a good episode. While it lacked a lot of action, it made up for it in so many other ways. We got to see Dean and Jack bond more, which was an essential part of the Supernatural Season 14 storyline.

The thing that made this episode so strong, though, was the Sam and Apocalypse Charlie moments. We learned more about what Charlie did in the apocalypse world, while also finding out why she was helping now but what her plans were. Sam shared his words of wisdom, wisdom he’s learned over the years.

Episode 7: Unhuman Nature

Grade: B-

After an episode that was mostly about connections, “Unhuman Nature” delivered an episode that was about answers and experiences. We continued with Dean and Jack bonding now that the truth about Jack’s illness was out. Yet, more importantly, we got a push in Nick’s storyline.

I was disappointed in Nick’s storyline afterward. However, this episode was a strong one. There was so much potential. Plus, Mark Pellegrino’s action was on point.

Episode 8: Byzantium

Grade: B+

There was so much emotion in this episode. The Winchesters and Castiel realized that they needed to say goodbye to Jack. They’d run out of options to help him. But, of course, they weren’t just going to give up after his death.

Dean and Sam made a difficult and questionable choice by calling for Lily Sunder. This did help to get Lily into Heaven, but it was still a questionable choice. And because of this, I couldn’t go higher than a B+.

However, the Jack/Kelly moments were beautiful. The use of the Empty was perfect. And the sacrifice Castiel was willing to make? Of course, the lack of earthquakes in Heaven certainly created questions over how unstable Heaven really is.

Episode 9: The Spear

Grade: B+

The Supernatural Season 14 midseason finale was good but wasn’t perfect. There were some excellent moments seeing Team Free Will 2.0 working together to get to Michael, but there were all sorts of flaws at the same time. One of the biggest was them underestimating Michael. You would have thought Dean would have known just how dangerous this archangel was!

However, seeing Garth was excellent. The forced transformation was a good effect. I just wish we’d seen Garth after this point.

Episode 10: Nihilism

Grade: B

Okay, the Supernatural Season 14 midseason premiere was full of excellent throwbacks to the past. I did love them, but at the same time, I was disappointed by this episode. Michael!Dean just wasn’t utilized yet again. It was far too easy to catch him.

However, Sam and Castiel working together was an excellent moment. The use of the black space and focusing on all the trauma Dean has faced over the years was heartbreaking. However, they both realized that Michael would trap Dean in a fake and good memory, which was where Sam showed off how much he knew his brother.

This really was the perfect team up and the effects were on point. The ending with Billie was far too cliché, though. Someone in the writer’s team clearly gained too much inspiration from Avengers.

Episode 11: Damaged Goods

Grade: C

As much as I enjoyed seeing Mary and Donna again, this episode wasn’t a strong one. Dean on his goodbye tour was sweet, but there were far too many annoying secrets. Although, I will accept why he didn’t tell Sam.

The storyline that dragged it all down was Nick’s. After episodes of building up Abraxas, we got to see him. The effects and the use of the lockbox because he was so powerful were perfect. He reminded me so much of Yellow Eyes. And then suddenly he was gone. Just like that, he was killed. The writers ruined a potential storyline here.

Episode 12: Prophet and Loss

Grade: B+

This was one of the darker and creepier episodes of Supernatural. I’ll admit as a Criminal Minds fan, I enjoyed the darker take. It was right for the storyline. I know a lot of people disliked it, though.

Overall, the storyline was strong. The effects were good and the writing was on point. We got to see aftermath to making Donatello brain dead in Supernatural Season 13, while also getting a storyline that was right for the characters. Plus, this was an episode with a beautiful moment between Sam and Dean Winchester – we need more of these brotherly moments.

Episode 13: Lebanon

Grade: A++

More from Supernatural

I didn’t feel like A+ was a good enough for the 300th episode of the series. This was everything we needed and more. Even after the second episode, I couldn’t find a fault in the beautiful episode. Not only did it deliver us John Winchester and a whole Winchester family reunion, but we got some closure for the Winchester brothers.

While the ending could allude to John remembering the events instead of thinking that it was a dream, I don’t think that’s the case. Part of him will want to believe it, but over time the dream will fade.

Episode 14: Ouroboros

Grade: C+

This was an odd episode. It started off as one thing and ended with something completely different. The promo was off for what to expect and it just didn’t quite feel right. So despite the ending, this is an episode that gets a lowish grade.

Even with a second watch, there are parts of my that just don’t enjoy this episode. It started off as a monster-of-the-week episode and ended with a major moment that left me scratching my head why we hadn’t seen this an episode or so earlier. Why did it take this long since Jack got his powers back to destroy Michael?

I’m assuming that this is one of the bad events that Billie saw. After all, it destroyed Jack’s soul and led to the Supernatural Season 14 finale. However, at the time, it seemed like an ingenious way to deal with the situation.

Episode 15: Peace of Mind

Grade: A-

This was a Castiel-focused episode that finally showed him as a smart angel. For too long, we’ve seen Castiel as the sidekick. While he may not be the world’s best hunter, he has skill and powers that are often overlooked for comedic value or to make the Winchesters seem bigger and more powerful than they actually are.

But it wasn’t just about that. We also got a quaint town with some excellent potential in storylines – potential that was actually used. I loved the costuming, the attitudes, and the acting. Sam’s storyline was on point, and I’m happy that we spent the majority of the story here.

As for Dean and Jack, they bonded even more. This was certainly something we needed to see, leading to the buildup of Dean considering the worst action against the Nephilim.

Episode 16: Don’t Go in the Woods

Grade: C

One of the weaker episodes of the season, Supernatural Season 14, Episode 16 delivered a monster-of-the-week episode. This monster was intriguing and I did love the connection back to Native American lore, which felt like a connection back to the original seasons, but after one monster-of-the-week episode, this could have benefitted from a focus on the overall storyline.

In fact, the episode is kind of forgetful. That’s not a great thing when it comes to grading. I had to watch it a second time to remember what was going on.

While I enjoyed seeing Jack make new friends, it felt more like it was to give Jack something to do than to actually push forward the storyline. The only reason it was needed for the season was the ending with Jack accidentally stabbing Stacy.

Episode 17: Game Night

Grade: B

I wanted to enjoy “Game Night,” but there was too much all over the place at certain points. We had far more lies than really necessary – from all Winchesters.

The storyline was necessary and I love that we got the resolution to Nick’s storyline. After realizing that he needed to bring Lucifer back, he found a way to do it and that meant the Winchesters had a race against time. In the end, Jack took matters into his own hands.

Overall, it was a good episode but not the greatest. And I dislike that Mary’s character didn’t get the on-screen death that she deserved.

Episode 18: Absence

Grade: B+

There was so much emotion to this episode. As Jack tried to find a way to bring back Mary, we got a bunch of memories from each of the core characters. And I do love that all four main characters got their own memories with nobody else involved. They got something that was important purely to them.

It was a bittersweet goodbye, though. The death just felt anticlimactic for a character like Mary. However, it was a necessary one.

I still have all sorts of questions about Mary in Heaven. Is she with the real John or a Heaven version of him?

Episode 19: Jack in the Box

Grade: B

This was an intense episode that delivered so much in 40 minutes. Initially, I was on the fence, but after a second watch it was everything we needed. We got to see Dean through the grieving process, falling back into old habits. Grief makes us all do stupid things.

At the same time, we had Sam in his grieving process. Like Dean, he made a stupid mistake. He could have stepped up and at least offered to search for a way to get Jack’s soul back.

Alexander Calvert was a star in this episode. He showed his acting range as he thought he was doing the right thing, tried to explain his actions, and realized that the Winchesters were

Episode 20: Moriah

Grade: A-

The Supernatural Season 14 finale included one of the biggest plot twists the series has ever seen. And it’s fitting as we go into the final season. It was clearly written knowing that Season 15 would be the end.

While it’s a strong episode, it’s not as strong as “Mint Condition” or the 300th episode of the series. However, it does still stand up against much of the season.

Starting off with humor, we got a questionable look at God’s actions. Would it turn into some sort of test that would see him go “Oh, just a joke. You don’t need to kill him”?

In the end, he was serious. His test was to see if his “favorite characters” would do as he told them. If not, he’d kill them off. And yes, writers lie – I get that this was a message to the fans. Don’t believe everything that you’ve ever been told in the series.

The effects were spectacular. I loved seeing the souls released from Hell and the old-school graphics for the Woman in White flashing. It was all clearly thought out to bring that feeling of the beginning of the series.

Overall grade:

B+. . Supernatural. S14E20.

Overall, I give the season a B+. It was a good season with some excellent twisty points. However, I don’t feel like the show made use of its shorter season as well as it could have. There are still too many plot points introduced that have been forgotten about.
