Supernatural Season 5, Episode 17 pushed forward with the apocalypse with the introduction of the Whore of Babylon. Here’s a look at the best lines from the episode.

During Supernatural Season 5, Episode 17, we got to meet another being from the Bible. The Whore of Babylon was introduced, as we got to see Dean start to wonder whether saying yes to Michael would be the best decision to bring it all to an end.

There were some excellent lines throughout, pushing the apocalypse forward and showing us how far Team Free Will had been pushed. Here are my five favorite lines from “99 Problems.”

I don’t understand why, why do you want me to say my name?

One thing I always loved about Castiel in the earlier seasons was his inability to understand humans — but attempt to connect with them. In this case, he couldn’t understand the need to say his name to the voicemail, and it showed just how far he’d come but how much he still needed to learn.

We don’t get it as much now because of the storyline that would come in Season 9, but I love watching the earlier seasons for some of this. Despite not knowing much about humans, Castiel remained the soldier and that was always important for me.

I found a liquor store…And I drank it.

This showed just how far Castiel had fallen; how much he relied on finding God and his thoughts now. He’s empty, feeling like everything he’s hoped for or believed in has gone. It’s a crisis of faith and while it only lasts a few episodes, it’s an essential part of Castiel’s development.

At what point does this become too far for you? Stoning? Poisoned Kool-Aid? The angels are toying with these people!

Sam has some excellent lines throughout Supernatural Season 5, Episode 17. One of those is a focus on the town and how it’s doing things he doesn’t agree with. However, it’s clear to Sam that Dean is starting to accept it.

We get a chance to see the Winchesters on different sides of the argument right now. It’s a chance to see that they both want the same thing but aren’t able to agree on the way to get it done. And this leads me to the next line.

I got one thing, one thing, keeping me going. You think you’re the only one white-knuckling it here, Dean? I can’t count on anyone else. I can’t do this alone.

Sammy admits that he’s scared. He’s struggling with everything that’s happening but there’s one person he thought he could believe in. One person he thought he could trust.

This line is one of my favorites for its connection to the series premiere. Dean tells Sam that there’s only Sammy he can count on to find John Winchester. It’s taken five seasons but Sam finally returns that line.

The people that I’m gonna see next, they’re not gonna get anything from me without agreeing to a few conditions.

Finally, it’s Dean, as we get a look at what he’s planning to do next. There was a hint at it earlier in the episode — how could he possibly kill the Whore of Babylon if he didn’t serve Heaven? This is the point that we get the confirmation. Dean is seriously considering saying yes to Michael.

We get more of this in the next episode. This is a chance to explore how far Dean is willing to go to protect the world and the people he cares about.
