16 most memorable guest stars in Supernatural Season 4

Supernatural Season 4 had some of the strongest and most memorable guest stars of all. Here are the 16 you’ll remember the most.

When it comes to guest stars, Supernatural Season 4 has some of the most memorable ones. Some of the angels stand out and then there are the young versions of the Winchester parents. And we can’t forget a certain psychic that appeared in a handful of episodes.

For the sake of this piece, I’m not including the guest stars that turned into major recurring guest stars, series regulars or characters. That means Jim Beaver (who actually showed up way back in the first season) and Misha Collins or Reb Benedict won’t be included.

However, those who were introduced for a couple of episodes and continued their roles in a small way in later seasons can be included. This covers some of the characters from the angel storylines.

Here are the 16 most memorable guest stars of Supernatural Season 4.

Genevieve Cortese

Now Genevieve Cortese Padalecki, she is going to be one of the most memorable guest stars. Surprisingly, Genevieve was only listed as a recurring guest star in the fourth season, despite her Ruby counterpart in Season 3 (Katie Cassidy) being a series regular. It doesn’t make that much sense, but there’s no arguing with them back in the day.

One of the reasons Genevieve has become so a well-remember guest star is because she and Jared Padalecki started dating after meeting during this season. She would later return for an episode in Season 6 when the Winchesters found themselves in the real world.

However, she also played a major role throughout the fourth season. As Ruby, she was the one that manipulated Sam all the way from the third season.

Julie McNiven

Introduced in the ninth episode of the season, Julie McNiven played Anna, the fallen angel. This was a character that was supposed to become the link between Heaven and Dean. She was meant to be what Castiel later became, but the fan reception for Castiel was so strong that the writers decided to change their course of action.

However, Anna still played an important part. Once she got her memories back, she became the voice of reason for Castiel. She pointed out the flaws in Heaven and the fact that God was gone. Unfortunately, she wouldn’t keep her views after being captured by the angels at the end of Supernatural Season 4.

Christopher Heyerdahl

Christopher Heyerdahl remains one of my all-time favorite guest stars on the series. Since watching him as Alastair, I’ve continued to follow him in other shows and most recently adored his role of Sam on Van Helsing. He’s one of those actors that will always be typecast as the villain because he plays them so well.

Anyway, Christopher took on the role of Alastair for two episodes, following two other actors to play the role. He certainly made this role his own and will forever be remembered as the white-eyed torturer.

Jake Abel

There is no way that I was going to miss Jake Abel off the list. Taking on the role of Adam Milligan, we can’t help but remember him, right? This was the moment we thought Supernatural was going to jump the shark! Of course, the writers had another plan up their sleeve.

In the end, it turned out that Jake wasn’t the Winchesters’ brother. He was a ghoul who had killed their brother in a way to get John to turn up and get revenge for him killing their father. We should have known there was something evil about the youngest brother.

Matt Cohen

Moving on from the youngest brother to the younger version of John Winchester. Matt Cohen has remained a prominent part of the SPN Family and it all started in Supernatural Season 4, when he took on the role of Young John Winchester. He was only in one episode of the season but we immediately fell in love with him.

This was a chance to learn more about the Winchester and Campbell lines. We found out that Mary was the hunter and harbored a big secret from John. Unfortunately, only Dean got to meet the Winchesters’ younger parents in this episode but we got to see a very different side to John Winchester.

Amy Gumenick

Next up has to be the younger version of Mary Winchester. “In the Beginning” gave us a twist to the story that we never expected but, in a way, was hinted at from the pilot episode. After all, Mary didn’t seem that shocked to see a demon in her home, right?

Amy Gumenick embodied Mary Winchester perfectly. She was sweet and loving, a character we all adored. If only she could have stayed out of the hunting game. Although, while she couldn’t get out, she did keep her kids out of it until John pulled them in after her death.

Kurt Fuller

There’s something about Kurt Fuller. He commands the screen when he’s on it and you just know that he’s going to play some sort of villain. It was clear that when he showed up in “It’s a Terrible Life” he wasn’t going to be the character you would love.

As Zachariah, he turned out to be an angel that you were going to learn to hate. Focused on making sure the apocalypse happened, he was focused on forcing Dean to play his role. He went as far as manipulating a voicemail to ensure the Winchesters remain apart.

Traci Dinwiddie

I always wished that the show would have been fairer to Pamela Barnes. From her very first introduction, you just knew that eventually, she was going to die. And this was before Supernatural got a bad reputation for killing all the female guest stars that showed up.

Traci Dinwiddie played psychic Pamela, who helped Dean figure out who had left the mark on his arm in the Supernatural Season 4 premiere. She ended up sacrificing her sight, but it didn’t seem to get her down too much. She did end up giving up her life when she showed up the second time in the season.

Katherine Boecher

Of course, I couldn’t leave Lilith off the list. As much as I disliked the fact that we went from little girls to a seductive woman playing the role of the big bad, this sort of did make sense. After all, the idea of killing a child, even as a big bad, seemed a little too twisted for the series.

Katherine Boecher did bring her own style to Lilith. She felt like a completely different character from the Season 3 Lilith we’d met. I think that was the issue I had (after Katie Cassidy played her as a child in an adult’s body) but hats off to Katherine for making her as memorable as she was.

Ashley Benson

In Supernatural Season 4, Episode 7, we got our very first Halloween special of the series. Ashley Benson took on a role she was typecast for at the time: the college cheerleader. However, she soon proved she could do much more by being one of the witches of the episode.

As Tracy, she was the one that would raise Samhain and break the seal. After this, she would go on to gain more fame as Pretty Little Liars‘ Hanna, and that makes this role a little more memorable.

John Rubinstein, Barry Bostwick, and Richard Libertini

I’m cheating by putting all three in one slide, but that’s purely because they were all part of the same episode. The three men would play three aging magicians, offering major character development for Sam Winchester.

We’d spend the whole episode thinking that one was the witch, only to find out that another one actually was. This was an episode about growing old and accepting it vs. fighting against it. All three actors had been in so many movies over the years, it was an honor to see them appear as guest stars on Supernatural.

Brock Kelly and Colin Ford

You can’t tell me that you don’t remember these two guest stars. One of them did show up in Supernatural Season 3, but I had to include both as they were in the same episode. “After School Special” gave us an episode with flashbacks to the past, showing Sam and Dean in high school.

This episode had some commonly forgotten guest stars (one of them because she was in for such a small part of the episode). It’s one of those episodes you find yourself so focused on the Winchesters’ storyline that you can overlook the people playing the other characters the first time. However, Brock Kelly and Colin Ford slay it was Younger Dean and Sam Winchester.

Robert Wisdom

When it comes to angels, Uriel will always stand out. He was one of the most hated, immediately showing his distaste for humans. If it was up to him, one town would have been completely destroyed to prevent a seal from being opened.

The character certainly made Robert Wisdom a highly memorable guest star. It’s hard to believe, looking back, that he was only in four episodes of Supernatural Season 4. He made such an impact, especially as the reason Alastair escaped the demon trap and almost killed Dean.
