In last night’s episode of Supernatural, the show takes on Die Hard and Team Freewill 2.0 takes on Michael. Yippie Ki Yay, SPN Family.

Well, SPN Family, that midseason finale of Supernatural was a doozy, wasn’t it? Left me wanting more, for sure. And frustrated that we have to wait several weeks before we find out if Kansas City has been decimated.

But what a ride it was! So pull up a chair, and let’s go through the episode that lightly paid homage to Die Hard.

More from Supernatural

“Kansas City won’t know what hit it”

Our cold open is in Kansas City, in a business plaza. Hitomi Plaza, to be exact (nice nod to Nakatomi Plaza from Die Hard). We go to the top floor, where there has been a massacre. Vampires.

The vampires go and report back to their leader, and surprise! It’s Michael! He’s (or she? He’s using a woman as a vessel), preparing for a plan. Female vampire brings in some new recruits, werewolves. And look! It’s Garth!

“Don’t tell Sam.”

Jack is up late eating sugary cereal that Sam has told him not to eat. He’s caught out by Cas, who joins him. Jack is feeling guilty that Cas sacrificed himself for him, but Cas told him not to worry about it. The Empty will never come for him because he sees no future in which he will ever be truly happy.

Jack also worries about heaven and his mom, but Cas reassures him that heaven is safe. Famous last words, I say. Whenever someone on this show guarantees safety, that means the worst will happen.

Meanwhile, Sam is on the phone with Garth, who is their man on the inside (yes, I sang Hamilton lyrics at that line, didn’t everyone?). He tells Sam what the change entails. Sam tells him not to do it or even trick Michael, just get out of there. Garth says he’s going for it.

Sam is uneasy about this whole thing. Dean is optimistic. They’re a step ahead of the game. They get a video check-in from Ketch.  He found the egg they needed and dropped it in the mail. Because that’s how they roll now, I guess.

“Only one in seven explodes”

Well, Garth makes the change. Poor Garth. At least the change took and we didn’t have to watch Garth explode. And with his new enhanced hearing he listens as Michael lays out the whole plan right in front of him. This should have been our first clue to the whole thing being a trap.

So, Sam and Dean split up with Cas and Jack. Sam and Jack go to the post office to retrieve the egg, and Dean and Cas go find Dark Kaia and get the spear.

Dean and Cas find the warehouse where Dark Kaia is staying, and they can tell that she had just been there. Dean is looking forward to killing Michael.

Meanwhile, Sam and Jack have no problem breaking into the closed post office, with Jack’s newly acquired lock picking skills. Once they get out of the post office, however, Michael is there. The vampires kidnap Jack, and Sam tries to fend off Michael. Michael melts the egg and knocks Sam unconscious.

Back at the warehouse, Cas and Dean find Dark Kaia, and she obviously doesn’t want to give them the spear. But in a very touching moment, she and Dean talk about family. And Kaia admits that there are people she’s left behind that she wants to go back to.

So, Cas and Dean promise they will use Jack to send her back if she gives them the spear. How they intend to make good on that promise, who knows. But the point is moot at this point considering what happens to the spear later.

“Don’t you go in there alone.”

Sam and Dean catch up and they’re trying to figure out Michael’s plan. Which he is monologuing to Jack at that moment. His plan is to use his super monsters to turn all of Kansas City into monsters. And he’s trying really hard to recruit Jack to his side. Jack just tells him his dads will come save him.

Sam beheads all the vampires and goes up and rescues Jack. Even though Dean told him to wait until he got there. And when he gets back down to the parking lot with Jack and Garth, we learn that Michael can control his super monsters’ minds because they ingested his grace. Garth attacks Sam and Jack, but Sam knocks him out and they lock him in the trunk of Baby.

“Impossible odds, feels like home.”

Team Freewill 2.0 decides they’re going in to take down Michael. They have the spear and they have the confidence. And so, in the best scene in the episode, to the same arrangement of “Ode to Joy” used in Die Hard, we watch our boys make their way up to Michael, who is waiting for them.

There is a fight. A very one-sided, skewed to Michael fight. However, Dean and his spear is a formidable foe against Michael. And just when Dean has Michael up against the glass windows, and we think we’re going to watch Dean drive that spear into him and cause him to do his best Hans Gruber impression, everything changes.

Dean’s vision goes out. We get flashes of him as Michael. And then…Michael re-enters Dean. Which we all knew would happen. He breaks the spear and turns to a shocked Sam, Cas, and Jack.

Michael tells them that he was waiting to break Dean, so he could shove him way down and not fight him. And he’s shoved him down, and Dean is gone. And then he pulls a Thanos and snaps. And now we have to wait through Hellatus.

Jensen. Ackles. That transition from Dean to Michael. You could see it in his face. You could physically see him going from Dean to Michael. And that was everything. I just don’t think I need to say much more than that. The man is amazing, and he was amazing last night.
