Supernatural Season 4, Episode 18 was as meta as they come. The Monster at the End of This Book brought plenty of laughs with these top five lines.

“The Monster at the End of This Book” brought in the fictional world of Supernatural into the fictional series. Yes, a book within a show about Sam and Dean Winchester. Crazy, right? Probably not as crazy as the best lines from Supernatural Season 4, Episode 18.

Let’s be honest, the whole episode is hilarious. There are some fan-favorite lines throughout and it’s the first introduction to Chuck, before he was ever confirmed to be God.

So, what are the best lines from the episode? Here are my five favorite.

Didn’t sell a lot of copies, though. Kind of had more of an underground cult following.

More from Supernatural

Let’s just start with the opening scene. As the Winchesters learn that there are books based on their lives, they also find out that the books didn’t sell many copies. This is clearly a nod to the fandom at this point.

Supernatural started as a bubble show. It was a risk for cancellation way back in the day, especially when the WB and UPN merged to create The CW. However, there’s always been a cult following and the line is a beautiful nod to those of us who stuck around way back in the day — and now we get to share it with so many others who have found the series.

There are ‘Sam girls’ and ‘Dean girls’ and – what’s a ‘slash fan’?

Ah, Sam!girls and Dean!girls remain a thing. What about slash fans? Oh, yes, there still are some of these. This is definitely another nod to the fandom, especially those who make up videos and write fan fiction.

If you don’t know what a slash fan is, it’s likely because you don’t read too much fanfiction. As Sam and Dean later discuss, it was connected to those who followed the Wincest stories, but now there are many others, with Destiel, Sabriel, and many more ships out there.

Well, there’s only one explanation. Obviously, I’m a god.

Chuck gave us the hint that he was going to be God way back then. I’ll be honest, I didn’t take this line seriously and, if I’m honest, I’m still not sure if the writing was ever supposed to be that he was God at this point. For one, he says “I’m a god.”

But regardless of my thoughts, this line in Supernatural Season 4, Episode 18 is perfect. Chuck’s character shines through and we get more fun references to build upon for the future of the series.

One day, these books – they’ll be known as the Winchester gospel.

Castiel drops in with the next line, sharing that Chuck is a prophet. Hearing that the books will become the Winchester gospel is hilarious. At one point, Dean points out that he’s full frontal in a story. That is nothing like a gospel I’ve ever read.

Now, can we find out when the books will be known as the Winchester gospel? What does that mean about the number of people reading the books?

It was too preposterous. Not to mention arrogant. I mean, writing yourself into the story is one thing, but as a prophet? That’s like M. Night-level douchiness.

Chuck finishes us off with this line about putting himself into the story. In a way, this moment put Eric Kripke and other writers into the story. In fact, there are a bunch of writers’ names thrown into “The Monster at the End of This Book.” Sera Gamble and Julie Siege get a mention, while Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund are used for Chuck’s alias Carver Edlund.

Of course, there’s the running gag that was never intentional throughout Supernatural. Bobby Singer is named for Robert Singer, who was an EP from the beginning and is now co-showrunner.
