This week’s Supernatural had an old-school feel, bringing back a monster we haven’t seen in a while. We also moved forward with the Michael storyline.

Two monster-of-the-week episodes in a row? Supernatural sure knows how to make fans happy! We had an episode this week that brought the Winchesters out on a rescue mission to save Maggie, one of the new Apocalypse World hunters. And in the process, we caught up with Bobby and Mary, who are forming a relationship, and learned more of Michael’s plan.

Let’s sit back, clear any bad thoughts from our heads, and explore this episode.

“Bunch of idjits”

Cold open has Maggie out on a solo mission that goes sideways. Back at the bunker, we see Sam debriefing the other hunters. It’s like Hunter 1.0 classes.

Dean makes fun of him with the classes, the trainings and the check-ins. Until one hunter, Maggie, fails to check in. Then concern sets in. Sam has all the hunters wearing body cams for training purposes, but as Dean quickly deduces, they’re also to make it easier to find them if something goes wrong, give them a starting off point.

Once Sam and Dean realize that something has gone wrong, they immediately set off to investigate. They arrive at the Rawlings’ Family Cemetery and don’t find any blood, which means that Maggie is probably still alive. They are interrupted by the groundskeeper who gives off so many guilty vibes he might as well have been named Red Herring. He shows them to the house.

They enter the house under the guise of being part of the Historical Preservation Society and learn that Bobby and Mary were there, using the same story. Mary quickly pulls Sam aside to tell him they were coaching Maggie and got worried when she didn’t check in. Mr. Rawlings’ daughter shows up and kicks everyone out of the house, she doesn’t want to deal with historical preservation while her dad is dying.

“This is what he was born to do”

The group decides to split up, Dean with Bobby and Sam with Mary. Mary reassures Sam that he’s doing a good job being a leader. Leading the Apocalypse World people into becoming good hunters.

But I want to pause here and talk about the hunters. I’m just not really feeling them being in the bunker all the time. In fact, their presence kind of annoys me. Anyone else feeling that? I just want the bunker to be parred back down to Sam and Dean.

While walking around the woods, Bobby lets out his frustration with Sam letting Maggie go out and hunt by herself to Dean, and Mary tells Sam about her frustrations with Bobby. They both end up stumbling upon huge red flags that all is not what it seems. Bobby and Dean find a dead body, Mary and Sam find a burned hunter’s wallet.

Back at the house, Sasha hears a sound upstairs and goes to investigate. It’s a vampire…that doesn’t chase her down to eat her.

“You have no idea what’s possible.”

Everyone has returned to the house, and Sam and Mary have given Sasha the monsters are real talk. And they have no idea what the monster could be. It’s not a ghoul, and they’re thinking it may be a manifestation. Sam goes up to investigate the attic, and Mary goes out to find the missing Bobby.

Sasha and Dean bond over messed up childhoods and distant fathers. Dean tells Sasha that she needs to let the past go and move on. When she asks if that’s what he’s doing, he says that he’s trying.

Sam finds Maggie in the attic, still alive, and he kills the vampire who is guarding her. It turns to dust.

Out in the woods, Bobby is confronted by the manifestation of his son Daniel. “Daniel” pins Bobby to a tree with an angel blade, and attacks Mary who comes to help him. Bobby manages to get himself down from the tree and he stabs Daniel, turning him into dust.

“Can you make me a sandwich?”

Dean, Sasha and the nurse are all standing around Mr. Rawlings’ body when it finally hits Dean what they’re dealing with. He sends Sasha out of the room and to safety and confronts the nurse, who turns out to be a djinn.

The Djinn is confused. He had thought this whole time Dean was Michael testing him. Dean gets the djinn talking and we learn that Michael has placed all these super monsters around to trap hunters and kill as many as possible. The Djinn has been taking people’s nightmares and bringing them to the real world to do his bidding, which is all thanks to the upgrade he received from Michael.

The djinn tries to read Dean’s mind for his nightmares, but something strange happens, and it’s almost like Dean’s mind attacks the djinn. Which is a HUGE red flag. Is Michael still inside Dean’s mind? Did Michael set something up inside of Dean before he flew the coop? Needless to say, Dean manages to kill the djinn.

Back at the bunker, the hunters are all happily reunited with Maggie. Mary and Bobby finally have a heart to heart where Bobby tells Mary about losing his wife and son, and how he uses hunting as a way to end his life. Mary and Bobby decide to go hang out at Donna’s cabin for a while so Bobby can recover, and for them to probably hook up if we’re being honest. Also, it’s a great way to start parring down the cast for a bit.

Sam and Dean put out calls to everyone they know. Warning them about the super charged monsters and the traps Michael has set forth. Dean is upset and is feeling helpless when it comes to Michael. Sam says that they’ll work harder to find Michael, even if it means he gets even less sleep. Something is bound to snap with Sam soon, mark my words.

Performer of the Week

I’m giving Performer of the Week to Jim Beavers this week. Since coming back as Apocalypse Bobby is performances have been mostly one note. This week, however, he was able to stretch his acting chops a bit. He was able to show real emotion while talking to Mary about the loss of his son Daniel and the guilt he carries around with him. And he really emitted pain and vulnerability when he admitted that he was hoping to die on a hunting job. Good job, Jim Beavers, and I hope you get more opportunities to shine like you did tonight.
