Nick’s appearance in the season 14 premiere of Supernatural lifted some eyebrows. With new questions at hand, we also have some potential answers to our theories.

OK, so maybe we don’t have straight answers, but we do know a few things for sure. At the same time, some new Supernatural theories have been sparked.

First, what the heck, Nick is alive? And not only that, but he’s healing? Hm, both interesting facts. Let’s explore, shall we?

Nick is alive

Yeah, how is Nick alive? Sam wondered this aloud during the first episode of season 14, himself. SPN Hunters’ Stephanie Caffrey discussed Nick likely being a clue for saving Dean and some options about how he survived at all. That presented the idea that there may be more roads to travel with this development.

As mentioned in that article, we’ve seen it many times on Supernatural. When an exorcism isn’t successful or is impossible, the host is killed along with the possessing entity. Demon blade, angel blade, whatever the weapon, it’s been the way it happens every time.

More from Supernatural

Truly, I am always quick to note that the real wisdom of Supernatural is knowing that you know nothing, right? Somehow, the standard of death was not the case. I am (not) utterly shocked. I will say though, I honestly didn’t peg this one.

Nick is healing

Another observation made by Sam was that Nick’s wound, the one that was fatal for Lucifer, is healing. They were both taken aback by this. True, it has been three weeks, according to Mary, but the wound looks pretty good even for that time period.

For me, I take note of things such as this when watching a film or show. I like to call it unnecessary information. Sure, it fills time in the episode, but that’s not really something Supernatural is known for. Historically, every single thing has relevance, even if it’s just laying ground for later or an answer to a dangling storyline.

The fact that the wound even had screen time, in my view, means it’s important. They showed it, they discussed it, it means something.

Enter the new theories. Not only do we now wonder what the point of this is, but there are a lot of ways it could play out. Will this be the cure to all the ills of Supernatural through season 14 or will it be a major roadblock?

There are also a lot of paths down the middle of the road. A few of my favorites rose to the surface right away.

New theories

So how is any of it possible? Was it because an archangel blade was used? Was it because it was done by another archangel? Maybe. Or was it because Jack’s grace saved the day?

This is where my mind’s getting shifty. I’m thinking that some of that sunshine is flowing through Nick right this moment.

Is that why he didn’t die? Is that why he’s healing? And does that mean we should expect Jack to be getting his powers back really soon? Valid points, thank you for asking.

Saving grace

We saw a little shot from set through Misha Collins. In that picture, we see some of the Supernatural gang in what appears to be a hospital emergency waiting room. Jack wasn’t there. I’m thinking he might be quite injured in the field and Nick could save the day by sending over a drip of the good stuff.

We did note Castiel mentioning to Jack in the premiere that his grace should regenerate in time. When? He didn’t seem so sure or that it was a fact. But it did answer to some questions we had about Jack’s power and whether he was just a human from now on.

Inner battle

If it’s true, maybe we’ll see a time where Nick enjoys this new strength and won’t turn it over. Maybe it will take a while before anyone realizes what’s going on. I’m not sure about all that yet, but I do think Nick will continue to struggle with his emotions being human again. Will Jack have to face the face of Lucifer in battle again? Will Jack?

As time goes by, Nick may start to remember some of the things that happened while Lucifer was in residence. At the moment, he seems to be blessed with mostly wiped memories of the affair. But he did have a spark of recollection of what Michael had planned for our Earth in season 14 of Supernatural.

I’m concluding that will continue to come back piece by piece. What we already know of Nick is that he was at the end of his rope when Lucifer first came around. That was the only reason he let him in to begin with.

He was promised he could have his family back. Now, it will be clear to him that’s not happening.

That knowledge coupled with returning memories of horrible acts committed by his hand may be enough to push him to a point where he doesn’t really want to press on. That may be the moment when he ends up giving his life to save Jack’s. Maybe a little slit to the throat to let that grace seep out but without it to repair him, will he survive?

It could be an end to his suffering, or it could be the ultimate revenge on Lucifer to give back what he stole. Either way, it would be a cool avenue for the story to take.

Don’t get me wrong, there are other ideas for Nick and it’s not that I want to see him go. His character seems to be deeply emotional and genuine, albeit disturbing. And he’s not hard on the eyes, ya know.

Big bad

After all, we have had some indications on Supernatural that only a select few are suitable vessels for such great power. We did Nick’s body falling apart in the earlier times but Lucifer didn’t burn through him like we’d see in almost any other attempted occupation. With this in mind, maybe he poses a solid option for a way to get Michael out of Dean. Maybe Michael leaves Dean but doesn’t leave.

I briefly touched on the idea of Michael sticking around before. The new big bad another version of the old one again? Nice move (again), Supernatural. This would be a way to see that come to pass.

Plus, it would leave the door open for Dean to get to fight Michael rather than spend the season struggling with guilt or whatever. Especially if he has memories of Michael torturing people at his hand, having Michael to seek revenge on would be healthy when we’re talking Dean Winchester. And put him in Lucifer’s image? Yeah, he’s as good as fried.

Or you know, Nick might just keep the grace after all. My brain is going ca-razy and I can’t wait for the next dose of Supernatural to see if any of this will pan out.
