The live viewer ratings for the Supernatural Season 14 premiere were down, but it’s not all bad news for the series. It all depends on where you’re going to compare the ratings from.

If you look at the Supernatural Season 14 premiere ratings compared to the Season 13 premiere, the live viewer ratings are down. To be honest, that’s not surprising if The CW isn’t going to stick to its own schedule. However, not all of this is bad news when you consider the ratings later in the season.

Supernatural Season 14 opened with 0.50 in the demo and 1.492 million overall. This was 30.56% down in terms of demo and 28.95% down in terms of the overall viewing figures, according to TV Series Finale.

These ratings are good for The CW’s standards. The night before Riverdale Season 3 debuted with similar ratings (and similar drops compared to the previous season). On Tuesday, the Black Lightning Season 2 premiere was surprisingly lower than Supernatural, with an even higher percentage drop based on the previous season premiere.

Seeing these lower figures is not a cause for concern just yet. The CW has routinely pulled in lower ratings compared to the bigger networks. And new seasons will usually see a dip from the previous one. The fact that other big shows are seeing big dips from the previous season premieres shows that it’s a network-wide problem.

What we should be looking at is the way Supernatural Season 13 finished. The ratings for the Supernatural Season 14 premiere are on par with the Season 13 finale ratings. While the total viewers are down for the premiere, the ratings in the demo held steady from Season 13 finale to Season 14 premiere.

Another thing to look at (and we won’t find out until next week) is the percentage of the audience that sticks around after for the second episode. It’s still very early days and the continued performance will be something The CW considers.
