14 fantasy shows to watch while waiting for Supernatural Season 14

Struggling to get through Hellatus? Don’t worry; I’ve got your back. Sometimes you just need another show to work your way through. Like binging? I have 14 fantasy genre shows that will definitely take your fancy while waiting for Supernatural Season 14.

If you’re struggling to get through the current Hellatus, you’re not alone. We’re all trying to find ways to fill in the gaps. Thursday nights may have reruns, but it’s just not enough. You want fresh content until you wait for Supernatural Season 14.

There’s only so many times you can watch the Winchesters from the beginning. Okay, I tell a lie. Rewatching Supernatural is awesome. There’s always something new to learn and you gain new perspectives of characters. The first five seasons especially will give you plenty of foreshadowing to spot that you missed the first time.

That’s all great, but sometimes you need to step out of the world of the Winchesters. You need to see the actors in other shows and look out for other stories that can be just as awesome.

One of the things that likely draws you to the world of Supernatural is the fantasy element. You likely love the ghosts, the lore, and the mystery behind the creatures. Many of you will want to stick to fantasy-based shows and I’ve got your back right now. Here are 14 shows to get you through until Supernatural Season 14 premieres.

14. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I know this is one of the most obvious choices to put on the list, but it definitely doesn’t make it any less worthy. It’s highly likely that many of the SPN Family are already major fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel. Hell, you may even have the comics that continued the stories after the shows finished.

Buffy really was the show that kicked off the fantasy genre. Yes, there were many others before it, but it was this story about a 16-year-old slayer that made it okay to love fantasy shows. This was the show that made being a geek semi-awesome.

Then there was the fandom. This was one of the first shows to bring about the modern-day fandom, where being in a fandom was more like a family instead of constantly being exploited. There are still fans today.

Plus, let’s not forget that many Buffy actors have appeared in Supernatural over the years. It all kick started with Amy Acker in “Dead in the Water,” and now we’ve got Felicia Day, who plays one of the most beloved characters in the whole of the series.

There are seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to watch. The first season only has 12 episodes, as it was given a shorter order to see if fans took to it. They did and from that point, the seasons were 22 episodes long. That’s 144 episodes to get through until Supernatural Season 14.

13. Smallville

This could be sort of classed as sci-fi, but it is more fantasy based. It’s a comic book series, telling the story of young Clark Kent. You’ll get to see him as he starts to develop his abilities—and yes, we spent 10 years wondering when he would finally get the ability to fly.

There are a few familiar faces that show up in Smallville. One of those is extremely familiar. I’ve actually only ever been able to sit through the fourth season in one sitting—the rest I watch for a bit and come back to for a bit more at a later date. The fourth season is the one with Jensen Ackles in it, as Jason Teague.

Don’t expect to like him the whole time! However, you will be happy to know that he left the series on good terms to take up the lead in Supernatural!

Another fun reason to watch the series through Hellatus is that there are 10 full seasons of the show. That’s 217 episodes of Superman goodness. It was only in the 10^th season of Supernatural that the Winchesters took over as the longest-running series on The CW. Smallville was another that came from another network and helped to kickstart The CW back in the day.

12. Charmed

This is likely another obvious choice, but one you’ll want to watch. There are many fans of both shows who imagine a crossover between the two, especially now that Supernatural has made it clear that some witches are born with their powers and haven’t all sold their souls to a demon.

Charmed was another show that helped to kick off the idea that it was cool to love a show in the genre. It also kicked off positive and inclusive fandoms – and the fans are still going today in various forms. They’re vocal and passionate, as seen now that there’s a reboot happening on The CW in the fall.

This eight-season series takes you through the lives of the Halliwell sisters, who learn that they are witches, descended from a long line of witches. They aren’t just any magical beings, though. They’re the Charmed Ones, the most powerful witches to walk the Earth. Like Supernatural, this is a series that focuses a lot on sibling bond and family. If you love that about the Winchesters then you’ll love seeing the Halliwells, especially the earlier trio.

There are 176 episodes of the series to enjoy. It was another one that helped to kick-start The CW with Smallville and Supernatural.

11. Grimm

When you want something a little shorter to get through, Grimm is a good option. This six-season series is a little like Buffy, but with a male in the lead. It’s also a story where some fairytale creatures come to life. There’s also an aspect of Charmed thrown in.

It’s all about Nick, who is from a long line of people known as Grimms. They are warriors, destined to protect their cities and the world from magical and supernatural creatures. Each of the creatures are part human and part creature, and they all have the ability to carry out everyday jobs and lives.

This is a little darker than other shows on the list. It’s certainly a little more adult, although it was created from NBC so still has the primetime aspect. There’s no harsh swearing or nudity, so it’s more on the level of Supernatural-darkness.

If you love Buffy then you will likely love Grimm. It’s not just the solo guy after magical creatures with a bunch of friends helping out that brings that Buffy sense. David Greenwalt was one of the co-creators, who also served on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

With six seasons, it’s a good length to get you through Hellatus, with time to spare for another Winchester catchup before Supernatural Season 14.

10. The Vampire Diaries

Next, we have a show that certainly helped carry The CW for a while (until the Arrowverse came in and Supernatural found its footing again). The Vampire Diaries is based on a novel, but it’s really only the character names and town that have been used. The actual stories are very different, which is a great way to draw people in and develop a new show.

This is another fairly long one with eight seasons to get through. Honestly, the seventh season isn’t the greatest, but if you want to see a Supernatural guest star, you’ll certainly want to watch the seventh season.

Of course, there are eight seasons worth of a Supernatural guest star. Candice King, who plays Caroline in the series, was in “After School Special.” And we can’t forget Sebastian Roche appears in the series.

This is another one of those shows that fans of both would like to see a crossover. There’s always questions over whether the Winchester brothers or the Salvatore brothers would win a fight.

If you enjoy The Vampire Diaries, you’ll want to move onto the spin-off The Originals. So, you don’t just get one show, but two for this part of the list! That’s plenty of material to get through before Supernatural Season 14.

9. Doctor Who

This has to be one of my all-time favorite shows. I grew up on the original series reruns because my parents were huge fans. Now my daughters are brought up on the newer series, as it’s so hard to find the original episodes. If you can find them, though, I highly recommend you watch them.

Doctor Who is all about an alien with two hearts but who looks like a man. This alien is a Time Lord and called The Doctor, hence the title of the show. He travels through space and time, helping people in need and protecting them from other aliens and creatures. This is a little more sci-fi than fantasy, but it’s so worth being included on the list.

Then there are the companions. He’s had a number over the years, with some of the recent standout companions including Amy and Rory (played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill) and Clara (played by Jenna Coleman).

You’ll be taken on fun journeys to other planets, to times of the past, and even into the future. This is a chance to see how creatures can live in harmony and how sometime’s the world’s greatest hero isn’t even human but is far more human than anyone else!

8. Teen Wolf

Who doesn’t love werewolves? Okay, so they’re not my favorite creature for tales, but I did enjoy Teen Wolf when it was on. It had more of a The Vampire Diaries feel than Supernatural, but it was still good to binge during Hellatus. The six-season series has come to an end now and you can binge while you wait for Supernatural Season 14.

You’ll get to meet Scott McCall, who just wants to stop being anonymous in school. Of course, that doesn’t happen in any normal way. He is bitten in the side and becomes a werewolf. Although there’s a slight twist, as there’s still a bit of human inside of him.

This is more than just a tale of a new werewolf finding his way – although it’s interesting that like Supernatural eventually showed, werewolves can live normal lives. We’re taken through a tale of love and loss, of finding oneself in the middle of a life-changing experience, and of learning that the bite could be a gift and curse at the same time.

Fans of both Teen Wolf and Supernatural do tend to enjoy crossover stories in fanfiction and it’s clear why. There are some overlapping themes with family, friendship, and protecting towns from monsters.

7. Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time officially came to an end earlier this year, but that’s not the only reason it deserves to be on this list. This is one of those shows that will bring the whole world of fairy tales to life. There is something for all tastes to enjoy, whether you enjoy twists on your favorite tales (Peter Pan was my favorite twist), to see good old heroes and villains, or even just want a show you can sit back and watch purely for enjoyment.

It all starts with a 10-year-old boy knocking on a woman’s door and telling her he is her son. Shouldn’t someone know she has a son? Well, she does. This boy was put up for adoption. He’s looking for her to break a curse in the town of Storybrooke. Everyone there has spent the last 28 years stuck in time.

Of course, she doesn’t believe him but takes him back home anyway. That draws her and us into this mystical town that nobody can leave. Anyone who tries is hurt in some way. It’s up to Emma Swan to save everyone from the Evil Queen.

The series has taken on a number of themes and storylines over the years. It’s also been a show for many Supernatural guest stars, including everyone’s favorite rogue, sarcastic angel, Balthazar.

6. Sleepy Hollow

If you recognize the name of the town, that’s because it is one from a tale. This is a story that brings Ichabod Crane’s tale of the Headless Horseman to life. No, this certainly isn’t the Johnny Depp movie, but the TV series with Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie.

Sleepy Hollow isn’t your typical Headless Horseman tale. It’s one of those with time travel, monsters, and ghosts.

While in the throes of death, Ichabod wakes 250 years into the future. It’s up to him to solve a mystery that dates all the way back to the founding fathers, the mystery of the Headless Horseman. Whenever Crane is revived, the Horseman is revived and it puts everyone in the area at risk. Now in the present day, nobody is safe from the blood-thirsty rider.

For a bit of a Supernatural twist, this Headless Horseman isn’t just any man on a horse who has died. He’s one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse—and only the first. There are three more still to come and Ichabod needs to figure out how to stop them from rising.

He does this with the help of Detective Abbie Mills, who is familiar with the supernatural world and quickly forms a bond with the mysterious Crane.

There are only four seasons of the series and all are relatively short, but they are certainly worth the watch! They’ll also be perfect to get you through to Supernatural Season 14.

5. Van Helsing

You may have heard me mention Van Helsing before. If you have, then you shouldn’t be surprised to see it make this list. If you haven’t, well you’re in for a positive surprise.

Van Helsing is exactly as it suggests. It’s a tale of vampires and the legendary vampire killer coming back to take them all down. Well, sort of. This is a show with a strong female presence, as Vanessa Van Helsing is a descendant of the line, awoken when she’s bitten and killed by a vampire during an uprising.

For three years, a soldier named Axel has done everything he can to keep her sleeping body safe and keep Doc, a doctor-turned-vampire alive. That all changes when a group of humans looks for sanctuary and vampires get in, waking Vanessa and raising a series of questions.

There are a lot of Supernatural guest stars who you’ll recognize along the way in this series. One of those was in Supernatural Season 13. Rukiya Bernard has appeared in two episodes of the series so far and I even got an interview to talk to her about her time on the Supernatural set and what was in store for Doc in Van Helsing Season 2.

One of the downsides is there are only two seasons. The third season has finished filming and will premiere in the fall. They’re short seasons, too. Enough to get you through a couple of weeks of Hellatus.

4. Game of Thrones

This is much more adult than any other series on here and may also be a little too adult for some, but for those who have been fans of Supernatural from the very beginning, you’re likely old enough for this. *wink wink*

Game of Thrones is one of the biggest fantasy shows of them all. The HBO series is going into its eighth and final season next year (surprisingly taking a year off this year). Initially based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, it’s surpassed that. While there are some storylines still likely the way Martin’s books will play out, not all will.

I’ll say again that there’s adult content. There’s a lot of sex and nudity, as well as swearing. Bloodshed, gore, and evil twists certainly take place. People burn their children at the stake, there’s a lot of incest, and there’s a fight for a big throne made of swords.

Oh, and we can’t forget the White Walkers. They are, by far, the best part of the series. It takes a while for them to show up, but stick around until Game of Thrones Season 5 and you will not be disappointed.

You don’t need to know the books to enjoy this series. I’ve not read them yet and adore it.

3. The Magicians

I couldn’t possibly miss this show off the list. The Magicians is one of SYFY’s best midseason shows. It’s full of intriguing plotlines, fun ventures into supernatural twists, and a strong LGBTQ presence. Females can be kings, there’s absolutely nothing strange about being bisexual (as there shouldn’t be), and you’ll meet some of the unlikeliest of heroes ever.

In fact, each character has his or her own flaws. Some are functioning alcoholics, there are those battling depression, some just want to be part of the group, and others are dealing with parents expecting more from them than they can offer. There are parental issues, questions of life and death, and a big bad Beast that wants to take over the world.

If you love shows where Supernatural actors show up, you’ll love this. Rick Worthy (Alpha Vamp) plays Dean Fogg and Felicia Day shows up in The Magicians Season 3.

Don’t expect to like all the characters. You’ll also find sometimes the characters you hate you start to love and vice versa. They all have their own great character developments and storylines. Oh, and there’s plenty of foreshadowing, but that’s possibly because former Supernatural showrunner Sera Gamble is co-showrunner and she certainly has Eric Kripke’s mind.

Despite there only being three short seasons, this will help you get through Hellatus. Plus, it’s been renewed for a fourth and will be out in 2019.

2. Wynonna Earp

I only recently gave five reasons why Supernatural fans should watch Wynonna Earp. Now I’m including it on this long list of fantasy shows. The more I watch the series, the more I want you to watch it. This has everything you could want from a fantasy series while you wait for Supernatural Season 14.

Let’s just start with the fact that the main character is played by a Supernatural guest star. Melanie Scrofano was in “What Is and What Should Never Be.” But that’s not all. It has the sibling relationship, plenty of moments that will make you think of Sam and Dean, Revenants that are like ghost/demons that only Wynonna can send to hell, and people making deals with the devil.

There is a Buffy vibe to this too. It’s got the humor that Buffy had and certainly that same humor of early Supernatural. There’s also the focus of being in one small town like Buffy, although this town is called Purgatory. Yes, really!

Oh, did I mention the colt? There’s one gun that can send all the demons to Hell. It’s not quite the same backstory as Samuel Colt’s gun that could kill anything (except angels, of course) but there is a supernatural backstory to find out.

There’s also an awesome LGBTQ relationship between Wynonna’s book-smart little sister Waverly and Nicole Haught—yes, hot!

I’m only on the first season and I’m hooked. There are two seasons and the third is currently on the air. Wynonna Earp Season 4 was confirmed days after the third season premiered. That’s how popular it is!

1. Shadowhunters

Finally, there is only one show that I could put in the number one spot. Shadowhunters all the way. This show may have been abruptly and unfairly canceled, but it will not be forgotten. There is a slightly more The Vampire Diaries feeling to it, but there’s also a bit of Buffy and Supernatural to it. At least give it a couple of episodes to see what it’s all about.

I was drawn into this when the third season started. There were demon names that I recognized like Lilith and Asmodeus and I wanted to see how Shadowhunters dealt with them. So, if you’re interested in the same, you’ll certainly want to check it out.

There’s plenty of darkness in the mystical tale. It all starts with a young girl finding out that she’s not the basic human she thought she was. There’s a secret her mom has been keeping from her and now it’s time for her to learn who the Shadow World is and quickly learn to harness her powers as she protects herself from things she’s completely forgotten about.

One of the best reasons to watch this—and something that my top three have in common—is the treatment of LGBTQ characters. Shadowhunters certainly shows gay men positively with the ship Malec.
