Supernatural’s second season had a lot happen, but there are four episodes that deserve to be watched over and over again.

Season 2 of Supernatural opened with the death of John Winchester and closed with Dean selling his soul to save Sam’s life. But what about the in between episodes? Which episodes set up the season? We’ve just finished recapping all of season 2, so here are four episodes we think would be good to rewatch.

Road Kill

This may seem like an odd episode to re-watch, but it’s definitely one of my favorite. I really like this one because it’s about the boys helping a ghost, not killing it. I also really love how the show chose to reveal Molly as a ghost. It tugs at my heartstrings and makes me cry every single time. This episode allows the viewers to see Sam and Dean as compassionate humans. Instead of just burning Molly’s bones, they help her find closure. They help her come to terms with the fact that she has died.

Crossroad Blues

The introduction of the crossroad deal. This episode is super important for the rest of the season. And for many seasons after that. In this episode, we learn that the legend of Blues singer Robert Johnson making a deal at the crossroads really did happen. While learning about the crossroads deals, we are also introduced to the hellhounds, which are brilliantly done.

This is also the episode where pieces begin to fall into place for Dean’s sacrifice at the end of the season. He learns how John traded his life for his own at the beginning of the season. This is important moving on into the season finale when he makes his own deal for Sam.

Sam possessed by a demon. In a season where Dean is worried about Sam becoming a monster, this is super important. It shows how vulnerable the Winchesters can actually be. The best part about this episode is we spend most of it not knowing. The Supernatural writers brilliantly show us everything through Sam’s eyes. He’s blacking out. He can’t remember anything. He becomes aware as things are wearing off. He’s killing other hunters. All of this evidence really point to Sam’s “evil” side, the piece given to him by the yellow-eyed demon, taking over.

Throughout the episode, we watch Sam struggle with coming to terms with what is inside him. We also see Dean make the choice to not do as his father asked. John told Dean he was going to have to kill Sam, however, Dean won’t. Not if he can save him. And Dean does some amazing saving in this episode. This episode also introduces the popular anti-possession symbol in the form of a talisman.

What Is and What Should Never Be

One of the first “what would happen if” episodes. Throughout the thirteen seasons, Supernatural has always had episodes that imagine the what ifs. And they have always had episodes that take the boys out of what is normal. This episode imagines what life would be like if Mary didn’t die, and they use it by introducing Djinn into the world.

What’s so heartbreaking about this episode is that in this alternate world, Sam and Dean are not close at all. Mary’s alive, Jess is alive, Dean has a girlfriend, and John is dead. There is so much about this alternate world to keep Dean happy. However, it’s the fact that all the people he and Sam saved are dead that causes him to stop enjoying this alternate world. By the end of the episode Dean is doubting whether all the sacrifices they’ve made for the job is worth it. And we get some top-notch acting from Jensen Ackles.
