#TBT: A spotlight on Jensen Ackles’ movie Devour
On May 31, 2005, Devour was released. It would be Jensen Ackles’ chance to star in a supernatural-style movie alongside his own dad.
Hands up if you’ve seen Devour. This is one of those movies that has been overlooked by many fans and, if I’m honest, I’ve not seen it for sale much now. However, it’s a special move for Supernatural fans, as it was one of Jensen Ackles’ movies. On top of that, it was his chance to act alongside his own father in a movie all about the Devil!
Today is the perfect time to look at the movie. On May 31, 2005, Devour was released for audiences. It’s one of those movies that starts off as something that looks like a game-within-a-movie film but turns into something even more sinister and deadly. You’re also left with more questions than answers by the end. I won’t spoil the ending for those who haven’t watched it yet. In fact, I won’t spoil any of the major twists.
What is Devour about?

Ackles stars as Jake Gray, a seemingly normal college student who is struggling with weird visions of self-mutilation and murder. It turns out that he and his friends are involved in a game that seems to have become a live roleplaying game. As the game takes on a bigger role in his life and starts to affect his friends in deadly ways, Jake has to figure out what the game is all about.
He soon ends up uncovering secrets about his past and learns who he really is. At least, who he may really be.
While it’s not the best movie Ackles has ever done, it’s certainly intriguing. You’ll be drawn into the twists of the story and Ackles certainly holds his own in the scenes with his own father, Alan Ackles (who plays his father in the movie). There’s also a fun devilish twist at the end, which will excite Supernatural fans immensely.
If you love movies that make you think, then you’ll certainly love this. One thing I enjoyed while watching it was looking for clues of what would happen in the end. With the concluding twist, you’ll be left on the edge of your seat wondering “what the hell.” It makes you go back through the movie for any clues as to whether Jake was really involved or not–and it’s hard to make sense with that statement without spoilers. You’ll get it once you’ve watched it!
