Supernatural Season 14 episode order hint at final season?
Supernatural Season 14 is currently only poised to have 20 episodes. Could this be a hint at the final season? Not necessarily!
It’s easy to jump to assumptions and conclusions, but this is how rumors start. One thing I want to do is to help to calm down the rumors until we get some official information from The Powers That Be: and those are The CW or the Supernatural actors/crew. So while Supernatural Season 14 may only currently have a 20-episode order, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a hint at the final season.
Of course, there’s nothing to say this season won’t be the end. I’m not a mind-reader and have no idea what the talks are behind the scenes. But looking at the episode order isn’t a direct sign.

Supernatural Season 14 was only confirmed in April. The fall 2018 schedule was only set this month. Right now isn’t the time to look for signs that the show is coming to an end. Look at all the rumors about the 300th episode and what that did to the fandom–and is not likely to be the end considering SPN is remaining a fall show.
May is still early to talk about the fall schedule and the show episode orders. There are a lot of factors to consider, including the results from the May Sweeps, any contracts that still need finalizing, and wishes from the cast and crew. Right now, the information is only from the Warner Bros. press site. The CW is still to confirm an episode order.

And an initially shorter episode order isn’t anything to worry about. Networks can and do order more or fewer episodes during the season. If the show isn’t doing as well as hoped, networks can decide to reduce the episode order and change the lineup from January. When shows perform well, networks add more episodes to the order.
Sometimes factors outside the show and network’s control affect the episode order. Supernatural Season 3 only had 16 episodes because of the writer’s strike, but before that and shortly after had 22 episodes. It was later in the series that 23 episodes to a season became the norm.
We’ll likely get some official warning of the end
While I do believe the end is coming soon, I don’t think this is a show that will suddenly be canceled without warning. I don’t think it’s going to be the next Lucifer or The Brave. I’m sure it won’t be one of those shows where other networks and streaming services are begged to take up the show to wrap up excruciating cliffhangers.
The CW has been good at sharing that upcoming seasons are going to be the last. The latest has been for iZombie, Jane the Virgin, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. All three shows were confirmed as airing their final seasons in the 2018-2019 season while at The CW Upfronts. If that was the case for Supernatural, surely an announcement would have been made then.
If nobody knew then, SDCC 2018 is likely the time to share this news. That’s only about six weeks away, so not too long now! The Vampire Diaries and The Originals confirmed their final seasons while on stage at their SDCC panels in previous years.
There’s more positivity around final seasons when fans get a warning. We know that we’ll get a rounded story with more throwbacks to the past. There’s hope that The CW would offer the same to Supernatural fans since the show is the longest running on the network!
Right now, though, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. If it is, I’m 90% sure that we’d get an official announcement. Right now that episode order is just an initial note by Warner Bros.
