Supernatural introduced the possibility of angels in Season 2, Episode 13. As Sam shared his belief in something good, Dean’s belief in nothing was temporarily confirmed.

Supernatural Season 2, Episode 13 brought up the existence of angels for the first time. It’s the episode that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki weren’t too certain about at first, but would later help ease in the idea that angels exist. Of course, the “angel” in “Houses of the Holy” was very different to the soldiers we know of today.

Throughout the episode, Sam wanted to believe that angels really existed. He had faith that if there were bad things in the world then there had to be good things, setting up the character development for today; although now Sam is the one losing faith. Here’s a recap of the episode past to remind you of the things that have happened to create the initial belief of angels.

The angels said to do it

When an angel gives an order, you follow through with it, right? Well, that’s what one woman believes, as she murders a man named Carl Gully in cold blood. Sam learns the angels told her to do it, and when he and Dean go to Carl’s house they realize he has a number of bodied buried throughout his home.

That same night, a man kills someone else and again says that the angels told him to do it. This victim had been stalking a young girl over the internet.

It’s time to do some digging and Dean learns that both victims went to the same church, which just happens to be called Our Lady of the Angels. When there, they learn that Father Thomas Gregory was shot and killed on the church steps. Dean instantly believes they’re dealing with Father Gregory’s spirit, who has turned vengeful; arranging the deaths of parishioners who are guilty of something. Sam believes it’s God’s work and admits that he prays regularly.

The admittance of prayer shouldn’t be that surprising. After all, Sam made it clear in “Faith” that he believed in something; he had enough faith for both him and his brother.

The angels encourage Sam to kill

Whem investigating Father Gregory’s crypt, Sam sees the “angel” in another room. This angel wants Sam to kill a man about to do evil. Dean is still certain this isn’t an angel, so suggests that they summon the spirit of the priest. While buying the supplies for this, Sam sees the angel’s next victim, so Dean takes off after the victim and Sam performs the seance.

Father Reynolds, another priest at the parish, interrupts Sam as Father Gregory’s ghost appears. It’s Father Reynolds who is able to help put Father Gregory to rest by saying the Last Rites. It’s a beautiful end to the episode, showing that salting and burning isn’t the only option.

In the end, the man that Dean was chasing died after attacking a young woman and being hit by a truck. While Sam explains why his faith is so important, Dean admits that maybe the victim died at the hand of God.
