Playthings may have been a Supernatural Season 2 episode, but it remains one of the scariest episodes. And it’s not all about the villain.

When you think of scary Supernatural episodes, “Playthings” is likely one of those that will top your list. Despite it being a second season episode, even now it gives fans chills. It’s not all about the villain, although the ghost certainly helps to make it creepy.

It’s all about those dolls

Yes, the dolls are the things that make this episode creepy. Just looking at them sends shivers up my spine and I’m not even scared of porcelain dolls. There’s just something creepy about the eyes to them and the way they can look like real people.

Part of the reason they’re creepy is linked to an also creepy episode in Supernatural Season 1: “Provenance.” When the Winchesters investigate a killer painting, we’re informed that the porcelain dolls were often created as memories of the dead. They would be given the hair of the deceased, which gave the spirit in “Provenance” something to keep her on Earth to continue killing.

The idea of keeping something of the dead around can send shivers up the spine of many individuals. It makes those dolls, which tend to look like the deceased, a little more real.

The idea of a lonely ghost

In the end, Rose realized while her sister was killing people. She didn’t want to be alone and she was willing to kill a child to get an afterlife-long friend. Rose sacrificed herself to make sure her deceased sister had someone.

That makes this ghost scarier than so many others. The spirit of Maggie wasn’t vengeful. She was lonely and it’s heartbreaking to think of a child ghost lonely and sad. This ghost would do anything not to remain alone, even if it meant killing another child. As soon as Maggie got a friend, she was happy to let the living live. No child wants to be alone and no child should but, unfortunately, it’s hard for the dead to have that luxury of a friend.

The ghost would stop at nothing to prevent herself from being alone. It made it a dangerous situation for all.
