Supernatural recap: Why does the demon tablet send Donatello crazy?
Supernatural returned after a mini-Hellatus, with the return of a number of familiar faces and names. Just how many survived the night?
Donatello was around to translate the demon tablet; Apocalypse Bobby returned to save Mary and Jack; Apocalypse Zachariah turned up with a new face. As Supernatural Season 13 returned from its mini-Hellatus, so did a number of characters. Who made it out alive and what in that demon tablet made Donatello crazy?
The episode, titled “Good Intentions,” certainly took us through some twists and turns. It wasn’t easy to know who to trust or what our good guys would do. Here’s your Supernatural recap for those who couldn’t watch live or just want a reminder of the important points.
Donatello cracks the demon tablet
Did you remember that Donatello doesn’t have a soul? Well, just in case you didn’t before he appeared earlier in Supernatural Season 13, that was brought up. When he turned up in Episode 2, he admitted that while he didn’t have a soul, he had found a way to live. Unfortunately, the soul was necessary while translating the demon tablet.

Castiel explains that the soul helps to prevent prophets from becoming corrupt. Sure enough, without the soul, Donatello starts going crazy while translating the demon tablet. He succumbs to whatever evil is coming from it.
But he does manage to translate it. Of course, because of the evil, he sends Dean and Castiel on what is supposed to be a death mission to get the hearts of Gog and Magog. Castiel points out that he’s heard rumors and stories of them, but has never come across them. Well, he manages to summon them out of whatever slumber they’re in and a fight ensues. Fortunately, Dean’s skills as a hunter help him take down the two beings.
Unfortunately, there are no hearts. They’re made of sand and rock. It turns out that Donatello sent them on a wild goose chase and he attacked Sam when left in the bunker alone. Sam’s hunter skills meant he could overpower the soulless prophet and secure him in that prison part behind the bookshelves in the bunker.
When they realize there’s nothing they can do for Donatello, Castiel takes matters into his own hands. He locks the Winchesters out and decides to delve into Donatello’s mind. That, unfortunately, leaves Donatello brain dead. The only good thing that came out of this was Castiel now has the four ingredients needed for the spell into the other world, but we can’t help but question Castiel’s actions in all this. He’s becoming the angel the Apocalypse World is seeing.
Jack and Mary escape imprisonment
Speaking of the Apocalypse World, a fair bit of the episode was spent here. Initially, it’s in Michael’s camp, who wants to break Jack and get him to open the doorway to the Paradise World. Zachariah is tasked with going into Jack’s head to convince him to open the door, but Jack doesn’t break. So, Michael throws him into a cell with Mary.

While in there, the two get to bond. Mary tells him that if he doesn’t do as Michael wants, Michael will kill her. So, Jack wants to, even though Mary doesn’t. She knows that Michael will take an army to the Paradise World and she can’t live with that.
If only there was a way out. Jack says that he gets headaches every time he tries to use his powers. Mary has been getting migraines too. The warding in the church is so strong that even humans can feel it, but there is one place (conveniently by a window) where the warding is weaker. Jack is able to use his powers and get them out.
While out, they run into Apocalypse Bobby, who is shocked to see Mary—believing he’s seeing a ghost. Once they get her identity sorted out and Mary says that Jack is a friend of the family, Bobby takes them back to his camp. As Jack bonds with the kids (using his powers now and then), Mary learns more about Bobby, the camp and herself from the world. Bobby agrees with us that the demon deal was worthwhile to get the Winchesters.
When Bobby learns that Jack is a nephilim, he orders Jack out by morning, even if that means Mary will go too. Morning comes and before they can leave the angels attack. A number of people in Bobby’s camp are killed (the angels are exterminating the humans) and Bobby makes it very clear that Jack has led them here by using his powers.
As Mary tries to help round up the kids and get them to safety, Zachariah attacks her. Jack isn’t about to let her die, and uses his own powers to literally blow Zachariah to dust (poor Chad Rook didn’t last long). Jack also destroys other angels coming into the camp. Bobby sees this and realizes that maybe Jack isn’t so bad after all. Yeah, that’s what we think, too!
