Asmodeus revealed the item he’d been searching for weeks for and it added a surprising twist to Supernatural Season 13. Now the question is will it kill the archangel he wants?

Caution: There are major spoilers in this if you’re not caught up yet.

After years of no archangels at all, Supernatural Season 11 saw the return of Lucifer. Supposedly the evil one, he went on to cause havoc, threaten the world and have a baby. Now he may just be the lesser of two evils, as Season 13 opened the Apocalypse World and introduced Apocalypse Michael.

But that’s not all. Asmodeus’ reveal of the archangel blade also brought another archangel into the mix. Gabriel is back and it’s opened up a realm of possibilities for that archangel blade. Just who, exactly, will this archangel blade kill? Will it end up being the one archangel Asmodeus wants?

Will Lucifer escape again?

Lucifer has a habit of escaping death. In Season 5, Sam managed to get him back in the cage and he remained there until his release (thanks to the Winchesters, Rowena, Crowley and Cass) in Season 11. During Season 12 it looked like he was finally put back into the cage, except Crowley had diverted him to his own cage. Of course, we all knew that would eventually lead to Lucifer back out.

Each time he’s found a way to escape death. The Winchesters haven’t even had a way to kill him, so they’ve had to make do with trapping him. It seems almost unlikely that the archangel blade will be used against Lucifer this time.

But then the writers could give us a twist. After the events of the last battle of Lucifer vs. Gabriel, Gabriel could manage to accomplish what he couldn’t before. This could finally see the end of Lucifer—as much as we love to hate him (and sometimes just love him) it is about time the big villain is killed off permanently.

Will Gabriel help get rid of Apocalypse Michael?

After learning there was another world, Apocalypse Michael has been focused on getting through the rift. He wants to become God of that world, despite Chuck being around somewhere. But is it possible that instead of Lucifer, Apocalypse Michael is the one the archangel blade is used again.

When (and we know it’s a when) Apocalypse Michael makes his way into the Winchesters’ world, Asmodeus will feel the threat. He’s likely to task Gabriel (assuming Gabriel is under his command in some way) to kill the Apocalypse World version of the big brother. Asmodeus may see that Apocalypse Michael is actually the worse of the two archangels and decide he needs to be taken care of first.

This definitely seems more likely. Christian Keyes is an excellent Apocalypse Michael, but he hasn’t been in enough episodes to really show us what he can do. We’ve not had the chance to connect to him in the way we did with Lucifer back in Season 5 (and then later in Season 7 in Sam’s head). His death wouldn’t be felt as much as Lucifer’s and it would be the one that makes the most sense at the time.

Will it be used against Gabriel?

Of course, the third archangel in the equation has to be brought up. The Supernatural writers have a bad habit of bringing characters back just to kill them. Honestly, it would have been better to leave some characters gone if all the writers were going to do was kill them off! They obviously didn’t learn their lessons from killing Charlie.

It wouldn’t be too surprising if they killed Gabriel off after just bringing him back. And it would be a complete waste of a character, but partially expected. Gabriel has always seemed like the weaker of the archangels. That could be due to poor writing or just the fact that Gabriel doesn’t want anything to do with his family.

A weaker Gabriel doesn’t really make sense. He’s shown to have some of the most powers compared to others. Where he’s picked them up isn’t known or it could be just the fact that he’s used his powers more for his “witness protection.”

However, he appears the weakest and it wouldn’t be surprising if Apocalypse Michael or Lucifer turned the archangel blade on him. It’s happened (supposedly) once before, so why not again?
