Both total audience and the key demo were up in terms of viewer ratings for the Supernatural winter premiere.

The Supernatural winter premiere could have gone one of two ways. It was either going to see an increase in views from the winter finale or it was going to tank. As the backdoor pilot to Wayward Sisters, there were chances that The CW would see a dip in ratings as there were plenty of those against the idea.

For those who enjoyed the backdoor pilot and want to see the spin-off happen, there is some good news. Both total audience and the key demo were up.

The key demo, which is the 18-49 range, saw an 8.11% increase from the winter premiere, sitting back at 0.6 (where it has averaged for Season 13). The total audience was up by 7.78%, with 1.870 tuning in to watch the spin-off’s backdoor pilot. This is the highest the total ratings has been since “Tombstone,” and the fourth highest of the whole season.

Nielsen also tracks the social rankings, tracking anyone using the #Supernatural as one of the first two hashtags in their tweets and on Facebook during the episode and for three hours either side. The hashtag came in second place for Thursday night and sits in sixth place for the whole week. The #WaywardSisters hashtag wasn’t tracked, but it was trending in the top three spot worldwide for some of the night.

These figures look good for the spin-off. The CW will see that people tuned in to see how it did and tweeted well throughout the night. This suggests that there is support for the spin-off, even if there are some who disliked it overall.

Some Supernatural fans did complain about the lack of Sam and Dean Winchester, saying that it didn’t feel like an episode of SPN. That is primarily because it was a backdoor pilot. Backdoor pilots tend to have more focus on the show that is being created rather than the original show and characters. Fans just have to look at the likes of The Originals’ and Ravenswood’s backdoor pilots to see how different the shows can feel for one episode.

Most of the response has been good for Wayward Sisters. It is highly likely that the show will be picked up by the network. All that is left is whether it will be a fall show or a midseason show.
