Why are Supernatural’s Winchesters too important to die?
In Season 12 of Supernatural, Billie told the Winchesters that when they died, they would stay dead. In Season 13, she told Dean they were too important to die. Why?
Season 12 of Supernatural made a big deal about the mortality of Sam and Dean Winchester. There was a new Reaper in town, Billie, and she was adamant that there would be no more resurrections for The Winchesters. However, in episode 5 of Season 13, all that changed. Dean killed himself in order to stop some angry spirits.
While he’s dead, he meets up with Billie, who has been promoted from Reaper to Death. When Dean, who was still at his lowest after the loss of both his mom and Cas, wanted to stay dead, she refused. She told Dean that the Winchesters are too important to die. They have work to do. But what did she mean by that? What work do they have to do? Why are they so important?

- The Winchesters Season1 finale explained: Did it connect to Supernatural?
Jack
Could Billie be talking about something to do with Jack? While Jack is Lucifer’s son, he has thus far renounced that connection. He has claimed Sam, Dean and Cas as his real family. As we’ve seen on the show, Jack has some very strong powers. Could Death be talking about their importance in keeping Jack on track?
They are almost older brother figures to Jack; mentors even. Jack has had some trouble keeping his powers under control, although he’s mastered a lot of his powers by the time the mid-season finale aired.
With him being Lucifer’s son, could he also be tempted by the dark side at some point? If that happens, would Sam and Dean be needed to talk him down? This one seems a little less likely, since Jack has been firmly developed to be anti-Lucifer and all about helping people, but this is Supernatural, and no one’s allegiance is set in stone.
Michael
As we’ve seen throughout the season, Michael is alive and well in the apocalypse world. And he has the goal of making his way to the real world. Now that Jack has traveled to the apocalypse world to rescue Mary, there is a real chance that he will succeed.
Season 5 established that Sam and Dean are the ideal vessels for Lucifer and Michael. Could Billie be referring to the return of Michael as the reason The Winchesters are important? Could the work they still have to do involve maybe being vessels for Michael and Lucifer again? Maybe it’s their job to get Lucifer and Michael both in the cage?
This theory seems to at least be plausible. I think that Sam and Dean are going to have to play a very big role once Michael makes it to their world. The question is what sort of role they’re going to have to play, and how much will it change their lives.

A future season
Another possibility is that Billie could be referring to something that won’t even occur in this season. She could be talking about an event that could trigger the end of the series. While Season 14 isn’t official yet, Season 13 also isn’t confirmed to be the last season. There could be more show left.
At some point, there will be a final event, leading to the end of the show. Obviously, whatever event that is, The Winchesters will have an important job to do. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have both said they want the show to end with the death of The Winchesters. Maybe Billie is foreshadowing that far off event, and it’s not as imminent as we think.
