Castiel has made friends and frenemies with a number of characters on the show, but which is the best?

When Castiel was introduced in Supernatural season 4, it was hard to tell what would become of him. This was a character that could have gone either way. While fans wanted him to be a friend and ally to the Winchesters, he could have easily chosen the side of the other angels; doing what they believed God wanted.

In the end, he chose friendship. He was loyal to the humans, trying to withhold everything that God wanted. That has led to him building lasting friendships with a number of characters, while also making frenemies and finding the odd love interest along the way.

With all that in mind, here’s a ranking of the relationships and friendships with Castiel from worst to best.

More from Supernatural

His relationship with April

Let’s get April out of the way at the start. During season 9 when Castiel lost his grace and became human, he found himself at the mercy of others. One of those was April Kelly. She looked like a caring young woman and drew Castiel in. It was all a lie, though. She was a reaper, sent by Bartholomew to kill Castiel. She would have succeeded had it not been for Gadreel (who was in Sam’s body at this point) being able to heal Castiel.

That thing with Daphne Allen

Technically, Daphne’s relationship with Cass has been his most successful. The only reason he left her was because he finally figured out who he was. It’s now unclear as to whether they both remember each other. Daphne was the woman who found Castiel in the lake after he killed himself and released the Leviathans in season 7.

Preventing the breaking of the seals with Uriel

When Cass was introduced in season 4, so was Uriel. Their task together was to prevent the breaking of the 66 seals so Lucifer wasn’t released. However, Uriel had other plans. He eventually betrayed and was about to kill Castiel, until Anna saved Cass’ life.

Being manipulated by Naomi

It’s hard to like an angel that will put the Winchesters in danger. During season 8, there were questions over whether Castiel would betray the Winchesters, after being brainwashed by the new angel-in-power, Naomi. This was a very one-sided relationship, but at least Naomi was upfront about her wishes unlike April and Uriel!

Being tricked by Metatron

Of course, Castiel’s relationship with Metatron has to make the list, but it’s low down at the bottom. At first it looked like Metatron wanted something good: to close the Gates of Heaven and help bring an end to the angels’ wars on Earth. It turned out that Metatron was lying. He didn’t want to lock up the gates of Heaven but expel angels. Only those he liked and would follow him were allowed back in. Unfortunately, Kevin translated the last ingredient too late to bring a stop to it all.

A potential friendship with Bartholomew

It initially looked like Bartholomew wanted to kill Cass. After all, he did send a reaper after the now-human. Instead, Bartholomew offered Castiel a chance to join his cause; to help organize the angels to help them get back to Heaven and bring some order back to the regime. Bartholomew even helps Castiel and the Winchesters find Metatron. In the end, Castiel realizes Bartholomew’s methods aren’t the right way yet again and chooses a different path. The other angels realize that force and death aren’t the only way to get things done.

An unknown friendship with God

Fans met God long before many realized that was who he was. Chuck Shirley was introduced as a Prophet of the Lord, and Castiel believed that was who he was. In the end it became an unknown friendship with God himself. God has resurrected Castiel numerous of times, knowing that Castiel is important to the world. The relationship hasn’t been strong or consistent, which is why this is so low on the list, but it could change in the future.

The illusive big brother Gabriel

Very few angels like Cass for his rebellious ways, but that isn’t the case with Gabriel. Unfortunately, a full relationship onscreen hasn’t been witnessed; but it is a poplar brotherly relationship in fan fiction. Despite being dead, Gabriel interacted with Castiel through a creation by Metatron. The two brothers showed care for one another, suggesting this could be an excellent relationship if Gabriel ever returned.

Forgotten daughter Claire

Okay, so it’s not really fair to call Claire Castiel’s forgotten daughter. She’s the forgotten daughter of his vessel. Castiel took over Jimmy Novak’s vessel, which led to him abandoning his wife and daughter. The wife then abandoned Claire in search for Jimmy. Claire is resentful of Castiel and the Winchesters at first, but she soon learns to trust them. She’s returned a few times since, but not had much screen time with Castiel. Maybe Wayward Sisters will change that.

A simple friendship with Hannah

When Castiel took over the organization of Heaven, Supernatural introduced the angel Hannah. She was a loyal soldier, who just wanted the best for Heaven and her fellow angels. That did lead to problems with Castiel and the Winchesters at first. A spell with Castiel and meeting the husband of her vessel led to Hannah understanding more about humans. She later returned in another vessel. When she was killed, Castiel was saddened by her death.

The old friend Balthazar

Of all the angel friendships, the one with Balthazar is the best. Balthazar’s sarcasm and knowledge of certain pop culture references was a stark difference to Castiel. The scenes flowed perfectly when the two were opposite each other. Balthazar was also a caring brother to Castiel, which meant he worked with the Winchesters in an attempt to save Castiel from himself. Unfortunately, that led to an angel blade to the back.

Better the Devil you know

Lucifer has been a strong character on the show; one of those you just love to hate. That may not be the way Cass views him, but that hasn’t stopped their relationship from being one of the best. Castiel and Lucifer have ended up working together for a variety of reasons, including Cass becoming Lucifer’s vessel for a brief stint in season 11. It looks like the best scenes with the two of them together are still to come, as Lucifer and Cass are now stuck in Hell at the hands of Asmodeus.

An unlikely friendship with the King of Hell

Crowley simply cannot be missed off the list. His relationship with Castiel has had some of the best broments of the whole show. They hate each other but put up with one another to meet their own gains. The frenemy relationship started all the way back in season 6, as they gained souls to help Castiel take down Raphael. It’s a shame this relationship is no more.

A relationship with a demon

Meg is one of the best demons to come into Supernatural. At least, Meg 2.0 is. Rachel Miner embodied everything that is a demon. She had her loyalties when they served her, but just wanted fun and to cause havoc like every demon in the early days wanted. However, she had a soft spot for Castiel and he had one for her. They made an excellent team, protecting each other when one of them was weak.

A close friendship with the Winchesters

I will state now that I’m not a Destiel fan. This isn’t an attack on those who are. I respect your wishes, but please respect that I don’t see Cass and Dean’s relationship in that way. In fact, I can’t just put Castiel’s relationship with either brother on this list alone. That’s because his relationship is with both of them. While he initially pulled Dean out of Hell, he’s also helped Sam in numerous, unselfish ways. Cass means the world to both Winchesters.

Castiel becoming a father

There hasn’t been much of Jack and Castiel together yet, but this is the best relationship on Supernatural so far. Alexander Calvert has taken so many of Misha Collins’ mannerisms and created a younger version of Castiel. Cass wanted to protect Jack long before Jack was born, so it was warming (although bittersweet) when Jack said Castiel was his father. That meeting when Jack saw Castiel in the bunker was perfect, along with the way Cass and Jack bonded later in “Tombstone.”
